Martin J.
Karandy
April 12, 1920 – July 27, 2023
Martin Karandy of Haverford, Pennsylvania passed away July 27, 2023 at Brandywine Assisted Living in Haverford Township.
Born April 12, 1920 in Schenectady, New York, he was the fifth of thirteen children of Ludwik Karandy and Stephanie Magda Karandy.
Mr. Karandy graduated from the technical program at Mount Pleasant High School in Schenectady, New York in 1939, looking ahead to a career in engineering. World War II erupted and like many in his generation, he enlisted in the Army. Serving on the front lines with the 897th Infantry Division as a machine gunner, he saw combat in Luxembourg, Belgium, and Germany. For his service he earned the Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantryman's Badge, American Campaign Medal, and European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three battle stars.
He carried on correspondence during the war years with his future wife, Emely Bottieri Karandy. They were married in 1949 and became part of a large family circle in upstate New York. After graduating from Siena College in Loudonville, NY, Mr. Karandy had a long career as an engineer at the Defense Department's US Army Benet Weapons Lab at the Watervliet Arsenal in Watervliet, New York. Prior to retiring in 1984, he scored a hole-in-one on the Officer's Club course there.
Following the loss of his wife, Mr. Karandy relocated to Haverford, Pennsylvania in 1996 to be closer to his beloved family. He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Emely Karandy of Gladwyne, PA and her partner Roy Perry, four grandchildren - Kirkley Silverman Mehndiratta (Punit) of Boston, MA; Eddy Silverman (Sarah) of Issaquah, WA; Molly Silverman of Gladwyne, PA; Schuyler Silverman of Los Angeles, CA and her partner Zaakir Carter - and two great-grandchildren, Moses and Naomi Silverman. He is also survived by three sisters, Elizabeth and Louise Karandy and Wendy Devlin of East Sandwich, MA and brother Eugene Karandy, M.D. of Corte Madera, CA, also many nieces and nephews.
Always up to date on world events, weather, business and sports, Martin Karandy closely followed the many accomplishments, activities and whereabouts of his far-flung family especially on Facebook. To its final beat, his huge heart was filled with loving thoughts of family and friends, including the fine people of Brandywine Assisted Living, who took great care of their "Mr. Martin". All who knew him loved him, and it can truly be said he made the world a better place.
