Yuen Ching Wong 王遠澄 died on February 3 , 2020 at Bryn Mawr Hospital after a short illness at the age of 92 . Husband of the late Chit Ming Leung 梁哲明 , he is survived by his son Jacob Hing Cheung Wong and his daughter, Cindy Hing Yuk Wong, their partners Xi a owan Chang and Gary McDonogh and his beloved grandchildren Larissa Jiit -Wai and Graciela Jiit-Heng McDonogh-Wong . He is also survived by a younger sister Wong Yuen Kou 王遠球 .
Wong was born in China to Wong Sum Zi 王深枝 and Ho Sou Lam 何秀林 but was orphaned early on . H e grew up in Hong Kong with his sister s and grandmother . As a teenager, he worked briefly with American forces in China then moved back to Hong Kong where he married Chit Ming Leung in 1955 . He worked for many years as a t ravel reporter for the Overseas Chinese Daily News, which allowed him to see the world and to enjoy a larg network of friends and colleagues .
He and his wife moved to Los Angeles in 198 6 and eventually joined the household of their daughter and son-in-law in 1993 after Larissa's birth . In Philadelphia, he and his wife established a wide circle of friends in Chinatown and wider Chinese communities and schools . He was known as a f ormidable mahjong player, a dapper dresser and an amusing and generous host as well as storyteller . He also loved spending time with his family and the pets he spoiled and became known to many nei ghbors and friends as Gong Gong , Grandfather or Wong Sir . He returned to Hong Kong each year and enjoyed traveling, spending last Christmas vacation in Japan with his family.
A service of remembrance and farewell will be held on Friday February 7, 2020 at McConaghy Funeral Home, 328 Lancaster Ave, Ardmore, PA 19003 with viewing from 1:00-2:00 PM and a brief service at 2:00 PM . Interment is private at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers that you send donations to the Life Transformation Foundation , which does social, religious and educational work in China.
