Obituary

Winifred (Fritzi) M. Franks, 73, passed away early Saturday morning January 25th 2014 at her home in Gladwyne, PA. Fritzi died of complications resulting from a lifetime affliction with Type-1 (juvenile) diabetes.

She was born in Riverside, IL, but attended schools in Albuquerque, NM. While attending the University of New Mexico she met, and later married, Philip E. Franks on June 10th 1961. After relocating to Philadelphia in the summer of 1965, she taught English literature at the University of Pennsylvania and worked on early computer programming languages for library cataloging and retrieval systems at the University of Pennsylvania Moore School of Engineering.

In 1980 she became the School Secretary for, and later the Development Officer for, The Philadelphia School, now located at 25th and Lombard Street in Philadelphia. In 1990, she began a 16-year career as Secretary to the President of Haverford College.

Fritzi was a resident of Gladwyne for 24 years during which time she was an occasional Gladwyne Library Staff Volunteer until her declining health prevented most independent activities.

She was an avid reader, participating in a reading group for over 42 years. She enjoyed gardening, and was an amateur arborist, planting, nurturing, and growing trees from acorns gathered from the campus of Haverford College. She volunteered time tending to the gardens in the Haverford College, Founders Hall Courtyard and served on the Haverford Arboretum Association Executive Committee for a number of years. She was also enjoying her role as grandmother, keeping track of her grandchildren and watching them grow and change.

She is survived by her architect husband of 52 years, Philip Franks, two children: Jennifer Baker of Malvern, PA and Jason Franks of Chappaqua, NY, and five grandchildren: Ava, Finnian and Kelly Franks, and Michael and Ryan Baker.

She is also survived by a sister, Katherine Sherman of New Smyrna Beach, FL, two nieces; Leslie Horne of Greenbelt, MD, and Susie Sherman-Broyles of Cortland, NY, and three nephews; Michael Horne of San Angelo, TX, Dwight Sherman of Warrenville, IL, and Bill Sherman of Riverside, IL.
