Obituary

Fr. William Anthony McGuire, O.S.A., was born on January 2, 1939, in Washington, D.C., the son of William A. and Grace E. (Young) McGuire. He was baptized on February 19, 1939, at Saint Martin Catholic Church, Washington, D.C. He attended Saint Gabriel's Parish School, (1944-1952), and Archbishop Carroll High School, (1952-1956), Washington, D.C. He spent a year as a postulant at Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, New York, (1956-1957) and was received into the Order as a novice on September 9, 1957. After a year at Good Counsel Novitiate, New Hamburg, New York, he professed first vows on September 10, 1958. He attended Villanova University from 1958-1962, and received a BA in Philosophy. He continued his education at Augustinian College, Washington, D.C., from 1962-1966, where he completed his theological studies, receiving an MA degree. He professed solemn vows on September 10, 1961. He was ordained to the priesthood on October 29, 1965, at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, D.C., by Bishop James McDonald.
Fr. Bill was first assigned to Saint Joseph Friary and Msgr. Bonner High School, Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, (1966-1979), where he taught in the high school and served at times as the school's business manager, academic counselor and athletic director. He was then assigned to Villanova University, (1979-2006), where he served as Assistant Dean of Admissions, (1979-1982); Assistant Dean of Liberal Arts, (1982-1987); Assistant Athletic Director, (1987-1989); Dean of Enrollment Management, (1989-1998); Senior Vice President for Administration, (1998-2006). During these years, he resided at St. Thomas of Villanova Monastery on campus, (1979-1997); Saxony Hall, (1997-2004); Saint John Stone Friary, (2004-2005); Bellesini Friary, (2005-2008); and Saxony Hall, (2008-2009). He retired from the university in 2006 and was appointed Treasurer of the Province of St. Thomas of Villanova in 2007. He resigned as Treasurer of the province in October of 2009, because of failing health. Fr. Bill served on many Boards of Trustees of our high schools and colleges, and was a member of National Associations for Higher Education. Fr. Bill spent his entire religious and priestly life in the province's education apostolates. He devotedly served young people in the various assignments he had, especially encouraging them to achieve their goals. He was known for his ready smile, friendly manner and sense of humor. He lived his life in the spirit of St. Augustine, the teacher, counselor and administrator, and will be missed by many whose lives he touched. May he rest in peace.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday January 23, 7:30 PM at St. Thomas of Villanova Church (Univ. Campus) Lancaster Ave., Villanova. Clergy, religious, relatives and friends may visit at the Church after 6:30 PM. Interment will take place privately in the Augustinian plot at Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken, PA.
