William H. Hoffmann, age 95 passed away quietly on April 27th, 2024, surrounded by family and 10 days following his wife of 67 years, Juliann T. Hoffmann (Julie).
Bill was born in Pittsburgh, PA to Dr. George L. Hoffmann and Dorothy Hurlock Hoffmann, both well known bacteriologists. Bill grew up in Pittsburgh, but lost his father at a young age and his mother remarried to his step-father, Frank L. Magee. Bill went to Tabor Academy, where he learned to be independent and found his love for sailing and was always an ardent supporter of the school. Bill graduated Summa Cum Laude in Industrial Engineering at Yale University in 1950. He was a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Society and was a coxswain for the Yale Crew team. After College, Bill joined the Air Force, where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant, running logistics out of Japan in support of the Korean War effort.
Bill spent 35 years at Alcoa, where an early posting in Lafayette, Indiana, which resulted in him meeting his life-long wife of 67 years, Juliann Wood Thompson. Bill began in Industrial Engineering at Alcoa and eventually rose to be the Senior Manager of Global Human Resource planning. He was well known in the Human Resource business as an early pioneer in matrix management, with numerous articles on Human Resource design in business periodicals. His global responsibilities included frequent and long trips to Alcoa's global operations in Australia, Brazil, Suriname, Guinea and other countries in West Africa, South Africa and Canada. Bill finished his career as a Consultant with the Hay Group in Philadelphia. He had numerous corporate accounts as well as studies for the Joint Chiefs of Staff for the US Military. He was also a member of the Management Council of the Conference Board and other professional organizations.
Bill and Julie were very family oriented with a daughter Ann and son William Jr, teaching them independence and how to seek experiences through sports and travel. They resided in Pittsburgh for 25 years and were members of the Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church, where he was a Deacon and Fox Chapel Golf club. They moved to Wayne, PA in 1985 and became members of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church and subsequently Wayne Presbyterian Church, being long-time supporter of the Reverend John Galloway, Jr. Bill was named to the Board of Directors for Baker Industries, a non-profit workforce development program serving individuals with disabilities. Bill and Julie were both dedicated supporters of Baker Industries. Bill had life-long interests in global travel, photography, trains, golf and family.
Bill and Julie will be deeply missed by their children Ann Scully (Tom Scully) and son William H. Hoffmann Jr (Jodi E. Hoffmann) and families, including grandchildren: Willam H. Hoffmann, III (Ada Peters), Charles Hoffmann, Sarah Scully Vaughn (Taylor Vaughn), Julia Scully Carroll (Chad Carroll), Alexa Scully and great grandchild, Carter Vaughn. He was pre-deceased by his brother Dr. George L Hoffmann and step-brother Curtis W. Magee.
The family will celebrate William & Julie's lives at a small service on Friday May 10, 11 AM at Wayne Presbyterian Church, 125 E. Lancaster Ave. Wayne PA 19097. Interment is private.
