Thomas J. Curry, 89, passed away on Saturday July 2, 2011 at his home in Wayne, PA., where he resided for fifty years.
Mr. Curry was born in New Brunswick, NJ in a home his maternal great-grandfather built in early 1870's. The family lived there until the death of his mother in 1985.
Mr. Curry graduated St. Peter's High School, New Brunswick, NJ in 1939. During his last year in high school he was manager of the New Brunswick Bicycle Club which had about 100 bicycles that rented for 25 cents an hour. The club was transferred to Seaside Park, NJ during the summers, where Mr. Curry ran the concession during 1939 and 1940.
Following Mr. Curry's graduation from Rutgers in 1944, he became a reporter for the Newark Evening News in Newark, NJ, which was, at the time, New Jersey's largest newspaper. He covered Springfield, Short Hills and Millburn and was responsible for all of the news emanating from these locations.
Mr. Curry retired from work in 2000 after spending many years as a manufacturer's representative for several major industrial manufacturers.
Tom had a great interest in Civil War history. His great grandfather migrated to New York from County Cavan, Ireland and enlisted in the Union Army. He was wounded at the Battle of the Wildness and taken prisoner. He later died at the Andersonville Confederate Prison Camp in Virginia.
Mr. Curry was a prolific reader, enjoyed photography, film, baseball, processing his own photos, travelled extensively, and was extremely fond of animals, especially dogs and cats.
He was a life member of the President's Council at Rutgers University and the Colonel Henry Rutgers Society.
Mr. Curry is survived by Mary, his wife of 66 years, brothers John and Joseph and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother James.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday July 8, 11:00 AM at St. Katharine of Siena Church, Lancaster & Aberdeen Aves., Wayne, PA. Relatives and friends may call at the Church after 10:30 AM. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken, PA.
