A Marine's Marine, Thomas J. Agnew, passed away on Friday July 22, 2011 at his residence in Paoli, PA. He was 78. Well known in the packaging business, Mr. Agnew's name became synonomous with scholarships for children of U.S. Marines.
Son of the late Edward and Rosalie Dougherty Agnew, he was born in Havertown, PA in 1932. Tom was a graduate of Malvern Prep and received a Bachelor of Science Degree from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania where he played football for Coach George Munger. He also wrestled at Penn and was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. His business career started at Connelly Containers, he then moved onto Mid-Atlantic Packaging and finally he purchased and ran Philadelphia Corrugated Containers. He volunteered his time with many charities and organizations including the Philadelphia Ball Committee, Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, and the Marine "Fore" Scholarships Golf Outing held at Waynesborough C.C. for the last 14 years.
He was the beloved husband of 49 years of Maryanna Hanratty Agnew. Devoted father of Elizabeth A. Agnew, Caroline S. Agnew and the late LCpl. Thomas J. Agnew, Jr. Loving grandfather of Connor J. Agnew. Dear brother of Ann Yungwirth, Dorothy Ryan, Rita Saunders and the late Edward Agnew, Richard Hammond and William Hammond.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday July 30, 10 AM at St. Thomas of Villanova Church (on the University Campus), Lancaster Ave., Villanova, PA. Relatives and friends may call at the Church after 9 AM. Interment is private.
