Obituary

Terrence "Terry" Reed Malloy, M.D., 89, of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania and formerly, Stone Harbor, New Jersey, passed away on May 8, 2024, in Gladwyne under the excellent care of our friends at Waverly Heights and Michelle's Extended Hands.

Born May 27, 1934, as the third son of Daniel Joseph and Catherine Kelly Malloy, Terry's youth was spent playing football and lacrosse for Lower Merion High School, and lifeguarding for the Beach Patrol in Stone Harbor. He graduated Tau Beta Pi from Yale University in 1956 and was an All-American athlete in lacrosse and captain of the Ivy League championship team his senior year. He also played football at Yale and fondly recalled teaching teammates to swim so that all would pass the mandatory freshman year swim test. He was a beloved member of Delta Kappa Epsilon and Skull and Bones. On graduation, he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army and served as First Lieutenant in the 82nd Airborne through 1958.

On completing his military service, Terry returned to the Stone Harbor Beach Patrol where he served as captain during the summers of medical school. It was at this time that Terry developed "Procedure": the coverage system used for beach rescue, portions of which are still in use today. He often stated that captain of the guards remained the best job he ever had. Thankfully he found a new purpose and satisfaction in medicine which would prove his life's work.

Terry received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed his urology residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. He started practice at Pennsylvania Hospital that year as chief of the section of urology, a post he held until 2012. He was a clinical professor of urology for over 30 years and trained many of today's leaders in the field. Dr. Malloy was an active member of the American Urologic Association, the Society of University Urologists and the Société Internationale D'Urologie, and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. His final curriculum vitae from 2016 reported over 150 publications and 472 presentations. Dr. Malloy's urologic expertise spanned from stone disease to the management of genitourinary cancers; he was particularly proud of his pioneering work in the surgical discipline now known as gender affirming surgery.

Dr. Malloy was a devoted servant leader to Pennsylvania Hospital and its patients and staff. His beloved colleagues at Penn wrote the following about his distinguished career: "During his more than 40 years of service to Pennsylvania Hospital, he built a urologic institution, led the urology residency training program, chaired the Operating Room Committee, and served as President of the Medical Staff. Dr. Malloy was instrumental in bringing innovative urologic surgery such as laser therapy and prosthetic surgery to both Pennsylvania and the region's urologic community. His influential voice was essential in establishing and rallying support for affiliation of the Pennsylvania Hospital urology program with the University of Pennsylvania.  Dr. Malloy, jointly with the University of Pennsylvania urology program, elevated Pennsylvania Hospital to the highest level both regionally and nationally." Terry was also immensely grateful to the Department of Urology at Temple University for providing him a professional home in the last years of his career.

Terry married Michele Munley in 1970 and together they raised 3 daughters: Kelly, Tara, and Courtney. He imparted to his girls his love of learning, profound curiosity, and delight in athletics (especially tennis), movies, books, and all things Stone Harbor. Terry is remembered as being an invested uncle to his much loved nieces and nephews, a loyal friend to so many wonderful humans, and most recently, a bemused and adoring grandparent. It is fitting that his chosen grandparent name was "Chief."

Terry is survived by his wife Michele and their daughters: Kelly Michele Malloy (Vincent Young), Tara Malloy Fletcher (Brian), and Courtney Moire Malloy. Chief is survived by granddaughters Livia Malloy Fletcher and Fiona Reed Fletcher. Terry was predeceased by his brothers Daniel Joseph Jr., Timothy John, and Kevin Daniel,  many cherished sisters and brothers in-law, and much missed members of his chosen family of friends.
