Susanne R.
Whitehead
September 13, 1952 – July 1, 2022
Susanne R. Whitehead tragically passed away in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, on July 01, 2022. Born in Washington D.C. on September 13, 1952, she was the daughter of Commander Richard T. Whitehead, USN (Ret.), and Camille Juliana Whitehead, who both predeceased her. As the daughter of a naval officer, she moved many times, and went to different schools, but enjoyed her attendance at Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii, ultimately graduating in 1970 from Stone Ridge, School of the Sacred Heart in Bethesda, Maryland.
Susanne attended the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, and King's College, University of London, before receiving her B. A. in Biology and Environmental Studies, with a minor in History, from The University of Pennsylvania in 1977. She initially worked for The Mike Douglas Show in Philadelphia and moved to California to help when the production transferred to Hollywood. Susanne returned to the East Coast and worked at KYW Newsradio, becoming Head of Advertising and Promotions. While there, she won an award for her reporting on the accident at Three Mile Island, and throughout her life she continued being a champion for the care of the environment.
After her parents gave her a gift of a Leica camera, Susanne also became a professional photographer, favoring dance and ballet photography, with her photos being published in Dance Magazine , in books, for posters, and for DuPont. She took photographs for Pennsylvania Ballet, now Philadelphia Ballet, and in Europe for the Béjart Ballet. Also, over the years, while living in London, England, she documented performances of ballerinas, including Merle Park, Natalia Makarova, and dancers, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Rudolf Nureyev. When she lived in Paris, France, she treasured the time she had dinner with Rudolf Nureyev. She even went to Russia and was involved with both the Kirov Ballet and the Bolshoi Ballet.
Later, she greatly valued working for The Kimmel Center, Inc., as Director of Donor Relations, combining her love for the arts, and building meaningful relationships with people. Ever the environmentalist, she even formed The Green Committee at Kimmel. Until recently, for the past ten and a half years, Susanne continued being a Director of Donor Relations, this time, for a company that focused on environmental causes for the state of Pennsylvania. Recently, she decided she was going to continue her studies to receive her law degree.
Susanne was also embarking on a new career, as the publicist for her brother-in-law's newly released book, entitled, Robert Morris: Inside the Revolution . She was excited to be able to promote this forgotten Founding Father. This new chapter in her life was just being launched, two days before she passed away, with a celebratory dinner in the restaurant Stars, at The Inn at Perry Cabin in St. Michaels, Maryland.
She was a talented oil painter, played the ukulele, and guitar. As a world traveler, she flew on Concorde , the supersonic airliner, sailed on the QE2 , and enjoyed annual visits to Bermuda. Visiting the New Jersey Shore with her family was a lifetime delight, and she almost opened a pastry shop with her sister in Ocean City, New Jersey.
During her life, she had the distinct honor to meet Pope Paul VI. She was committed to teaching the children in religious studies at Immaculate Conception Church BVM in Jenkintown, and she had just been recognized for fifteen years of dedication for her service. Family Rosary, mentoring the children in the Parish, serving others, and her devotion to her faith, were of supreme importance to her. She was compassionate and selfless, always available to help someone, and she truly loved her family and friends.
A beloved member of the community in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, Susanne never wanted to move because of her allegiance and bonds there. Susanne was on the Board of Cheltenham Chamber of Citizens and worked hard to preserve the historic Jenkintown Wyncote Train Station. She volunteered for Wreaths Across America.
Susanne is survived by her loving sister, Julianne Whitehead Morris, her devoted brother-in-law, Robert M. Morris, and her goddaughter, Gabrielle Kilkenny.
Family and friends are invited to a Visitation on Friday July 15th from 10:00 to 11:00 AM with Funeral Mass to begin at 11:00 AM at Immaculate Conception B.V.M. Church, 606 West Avenue, Jenkintown, PA 19046. Interment will be private.
