Dr. Stuart Hayes Lewis, of Newtown Square, a former resident of Villanova, PA, died April 14, 2007, after a long illness, bravely borne. A retired orthopaedic surgeon, he practiced in Havertown, PA.
He was born in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia on March 28, 1927, the son of Harry Hayes Lewis and Mary Stuart Lewis. He graduated from the Medical School of the University of Adelaide, in South Australia in 1950, obtaining an M.B.B.S. degree. After interning at Regina General Hospital in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, he spent two years in an orthopaedic residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
At Johns Hopkins, he met a fellow physician, the former Mary Martin Powell of Fredericksburg, Virginia and they married in Mexico City in 1954. They then spent almost a year traveling in Latin America on their honeymoon, finishing up in England where he studied for and obtained Part I of the F.R.C.S., before deciding to return to the U.S. for practice. While in London, he also worked for the National Health Service doing emergency house calls.
Upon his return, he became the first Australian to pass the ECMFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) exam, and obtained a Pennsylvania license. He completed his residency training at Temple University Hospital and at Shriner's Hospital. He started into practice at Haverford General Hospital, also serving on the teaching staff at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital.
He was a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society, the Philadelphia Orthopaedic Society, the Delaware County Medical Society, the College of Physicians in Philadelphia and a Friend of the Bryn Mawr College Library. He was a member of the Order of Freemasonry of South Australia.
Dr. Lewis had a lifelong interest in travel, art, music, and history, as well as the cuisines of many countries and was knowledgeable and appreciative of antiques.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Mary M. Powell, M.D., a sister, Judith McEntee of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, as well as four daughters: Dee Lewis Cottingham, Caroline Lewis Bradley, Margaret McCormick Lewis and Judith Vaughan Lewis; four grandchildren: Tiffany Blue, Caitlin Bradley Brymer, Fionnuala Bradley and Sam Cook, and five great-grandchildren: Amber, Autumn and Christian Zappe, Serenity Blue and Rebecca Mary Brymer.
The family is deeply grateful to his loyal, patient and loving caregivers: Wendy Isaac Morgan, Sharon Suber, Shareese Hubert, Almarie Haughton (Deon), and Ralph J. Boykins (Jay).
The burial is planned for Thursday, April 19th at Oak Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg, VA, in his wife's family plot. A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 29th at 4:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Wayne, PA.
