Obituary

Dr. Rudolf Friederich Laveran-Stiebar, born April 17, 1924, died peacefully on August 2 , 2017 from complications of dementia.

Dr. Laveran was born in the tiny Austrian village of St. Peter-Freienstein, nestled in the foothills of the Alps. From a young age he demonstrated significant artistic talent and at one time planned to pursue a graduate education focused on artistic portraits and landscape painting. However, after he survived World War II, he decided to forgo his plans for Art School and instead pursue a career in medicine. He enrolled in the University of Vienna Medical School, graduating in 1950. In 1952, he accepted a residency position in Newport News, Virginia where he worked in the emergency room for over a year. He then applied to Pennsylvania Hospital's Residency program in Psychiatry and was accepted in 1954. He graduated from the program in 1958 and also completed training in psychoanalysis. He joined the attending staff at the Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital. For the next 40 years he treated countless patients in both the hospital and the out patient setting. He had a particular interest in the treatment of addiction, depression and in marital counseling.

Dr. Laveran was an avid sportsman and grew up with a love of the outdoors and hunting from his early days as a boy in Austria. He enjoyed track and field, skiing, soccer, tennis , and golf. He was known for his incredible energy, his competiveness but even more so for his humility and his kindness. He was a devout Roman Catholic who attended Mass at St Thomas of Villanova, where he often served as a Eucharistic minister, and he had a particular fondness for the Augustinian Order.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years Deirdre (nee Harder) Laveran, his four children Rudi (Hattie), Cici Brooks (Clint), Mia Buhl (David) and Peter (Donna) as well as 12 grandchildren.
