ROGER R. SHOALS
Age 86, of Gladwyne, PA, passed away peacefully surrounded by family. Roger was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was married to his beloved wife, Jean, for 65 years.

A proud graduate of the University of Maryland, Roger was voted an All-American offensive lineman and also excelled in wrestling. He was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the 16th round of the 1961 NFL Draft. Over nine NFL seasons (1963–1971) with the Browns, Detroit Lions, and Denver Broncos, he played in 104 games with 70 starts, primarily as an offensive tackle.

Shoals was a key contributor to Cleveland's dominant offensive line during their 1964 NFL Championship season, playing every game and helping the Browns shut out the Baltimore Colts 27–0 in the title game. He was a key blocker for Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown during his time in Cleveland. Known for his toughness and consistency, Shoals recorded two career fumble recoveries, including a memorable touchdown return in 1964 after recovering a Philadelphia Eagles fumble. He later helped the Detroit Lions reach the playoffs in 1970.

After retiring from football, Roger worked 30 years at Gould Paper and later became part-owner of Kutztown Auto. He was known for his strong work ethic and generous spirit. He cherished time with his family, especially in Stone Harbor, NJ, and was a devoted member of St. John Vianney Church.

Roger is survived by his wife Jean; children Mike Shoals (Leslie) and Hollie Casper (Rob); and grandchildren Christopher and Katherine Shoals, Ryan Casper (Maddie), and Brendan Casper (Kylie).

Visitation will be held Thursday, July 10, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at St. John Vianney Church, 350 Conshohocken State Rd, Gladwyne, PA, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m.
