Obituary

Robert John Kirkpatrick, III. "Kirk", of Bryn Mawr, PA., died on September 12, 2012 at the age of 80. He was oldest son of the late Robert J. Kirkpatrick Jr. originally of Portsmouth, NH and Ellen Hastings Kirkpatrick, originally of Atlanta, GA.

He was the husband for almost 49 years of Jennifer Howell Kirkpatrick, loving father of Scott H. Kirkpatrick, of Wilson, WY and his wife, Carrie Friess Kirkpatrick and granddaughters Lyla and Carly; R. Bruce R. Kirkpatrick of Wynnewood, PA and his wife, Annie Lukens Kirkpatrick and grandchildren Wren and Russell; Libby H. Kirkpatrick of Cambridge, MA and her husband Christopher H. Rowe, and grandson Charlie; and dear brother of Jack H. Kirkpatrick of Gladwyne. His sister, "Pat" Kirkpatrick Lindblom predeceased him.

Kirk was born in Memphis, TN on December 16, 1931, and was raised in Altanta, GA, and Winnetka, IL before moving to the Main Line of Philadelphia. He graduated from The Haverford School in 1950 and Dartmouth College in 1954. He flew helicopters and fixed wing aircraft in the U.S. Marine Corps, actively serving from 1955 to 1959, becoming a Captain in the Reserves, flying out of Willow Grove until 1968. His entire investment career was with Merrill Lynch in Philadelphia, which he joined in 1959, retiring as a senior vice president in 1993 for health reasons. As the beneficiary of a liver transplant, Kirk in turn made a donation to the Penn Memory Center.

Kirk married Jenny, oldest daughter of Air Vice Marshall E.M."Tom" and Helen Hayes Howell on 9/14/63 at R.A.F. Technical Command, Henlow, UK where her father was commanding officer. Kirk was a member of the Savoy Opera Company, Merion Cricket Club, the Union League and the Racquet Club, and accapella singing groups "The Commuters" and the "23 Trolley". Kirk loved music, played a mean piano, was a keen competitor on the courts and had a lively wit. He served on the Board of The Harriton Association.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Memorial Service on Saturday September 22, 11 AM at Church of the Redeemer, 230 Pennswood Road, Bryn Mawr, PA. Interment will be private.
