Obituary

Robert M. Hilberts, formerly of Gladwyne, PA, passed away on March 10, 2026 at Dunwoody Village in Newtown Square, PA.  He was 94.

Dear son of Albert Hilberts and Margaret Gallagher, Bob was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 12, 1931.  He was a graduate of Denison University.  Bob served in the US Army after World War II, stationed in Germany.

Bob was the beloved husband of the late Clara Scanlan Hilberts who died in 2025.  He was the loving father of Thomas M. Hilberts (Betsey) and the late John "Jay" S. Hilberts.  Dear grandfather of Eliza Allen (Matt), Greta Hilberts and Allie Hilberts.  Great-grandfather of Margaret Elizabeth Allen.  He was predeceased by his brother Thomas Martin Hilberts.

Bob was happily married to Clara for 68 years. Together they raised their two sons. They spent many years active in their parish community of St. John Vianney.  As a couple, they worked with several charitable organizations, including Saint Edmond's Home for Children and Friends of Saint Christopher's Hospital for Children. He was invited to sit on the board of Saint Christopher's Hospital, on which he proudly served for close to 20 years.

Bob enjoyed spending time in Avalon, NJ in the summer with family and friends. A love of the beach and the ocean became a given in the Hilberts family and later in life Bob and Clara started visiting Sanibel, FL to vacation every October for their anniversary.

Bob started the business that continues to bear his name in 1964. It was only a worldwide pandemic that forced him to stay at home in 2020. His business principles can be summed up in two words: honesty and integrity.

Bob worked hard and played hard. He loved music and sports. Always competitive on the tennis court, he played for the team at Philadelphia Country Club well into his sixties. In his younger years he sang in the church choir. His musical tastes were eclectic, but his favorite genre was the big band swing music of the 50's. When the volume was turned up, it usually meant that he had closed a big sale that day.

Relatives and friends are invited on Friday March 20th, Visitation from 10:30 to 11:00 AM with Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM at St. John Vianney Church, 350 Conshohocken State Rd., Gladwyne PA 19035.  Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children , 160 E. Erie Ave., Philadelphia PA 19134.
