Richard William
Graham
November 25, 1934 – March 24, 2025
Richard "Dick" William Graham, 90, of Bryn Mawr, formerly of Gladwyne, PA., passed away peacefully at Beaumont Retirement Community on March 24, 2025 surrounded by his loving family.
He was the oldest son of Agnes and Grant Rowe Graham and was predeceased by his brother, Alexander (Sandy) John Graham and sister, Marilyn Graham Abbady. Dick attended the Haverford School, Lafayette College and The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in Finance. He began his career as Controller of the Philadelphia Papermill, Manayunk, of Container Corporation of America (CCA), a global paper and packaging company, headquartered in Chicago. CCA, which established the Aspen Institute, was acquired by Mobil Oil and later sold to Jefferson Smurfit. Dick's career spanned 40+ years with the company, moving from Philadelphia to Chicago to St. Louis, ultimately ascending to Chief Executive Officer. The company is now known as Smurfit Westrock.
Dick married his true love, Mary Elizabeth Powell, in 1959 and had four children: Susan Graham Campbell, Carol Graham Seid (Jay), Betsy Graham Tilkemeier (Jon) and Richard (Rick) W. Graham III. He was an avid Philadelphia sports fan and took great joy in watching the Phillies win 2 World Series and the Eagles win 2 Super Bowls including the recent victory over the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. Dick played golf at Merion Golf Club, where he was a member for over 55 years. He and Mary enjoyed extensive travel, frequently returning to many of their favorite places including France, Argentina, Hawaii, St. Barths, Boca Grande, FL, Squam Lake, NH and Northeast Harbor, ME.
Dick and Mary had a small ranch on the Wind River in Wyoming, where they enjoyed fly fishing and riding their horses and a farm in Chestertown, Maryland, where they grew hay, relaxed and enjoyed the Eastern Shore. Dick will be remembered as a revered business leader who had a competitive spirit and for his dedicated service to The Haverford School where Dick served for many years as Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees. Dick was also a veteran who retired from the U.S. Army as Captain. Mostly, he was a caring, loving husband and father, a good shepherd, and an exemplary family man. Dick is survived by his wife, Mary, four children, six grandchildren: Sarah Campbell, Sam Stevens, Lauren Stevens Harris (Kevin), Jake Stevens, First Lieutenant W. Graham Tilkemeier, Charlie Tilkemeier, two step-grandchildren, Brianna and Kyle Seid and a great-grandson, Harper Harris.
Dick was courageous and patient throughout his long battle with Parkinson's disease. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and experienced his affection, reassuring presence, clever humor and sense of style but especially by his beloved wife of 66 years, Mary, and his dog, Pheebee.
We ask all to pray for Dick's immortal soul now in the arms of the Lord.
