Obituary

Patricia Millar Burland, the devoted wife of J. Alexis Burland, M.D. who died in 2004, passed away on June 11, 2021 at Waverly Heights in Gladwyne, PA. She was 94.

She was a graduate of Haddonfield Memorial High School, Smith College and the Bryn Mawr College Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research.

Prominent during her life was her interest in education for clinical social work.  During the 1960's she was a member of the faculty of the Bryn Mawr College Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research and returned there to teach from time to time.  She was active in the creation of a three year post-masters training program for clinical social workers by the Pennsylvania Society for Clinical Social Work.  With the Children's Aid Society of Pennsylvania she helped develop a program for recent college graduates to explore a career in clinical social work.  She helped bring principles of clinical social work to the Juvenile Probation Department of Montgomery County.

Pat, as she was affectionately called, participated in formulating the Statement of the Code of Ethics of the Pennsylvania Society for Clinical Social Work and served as Chair of the Ethics Committee of that organization for many years.

She was in private practice in Bala Cynwyd for over fifty years in the course of which she also trained and mentored a generation of practicing clinical social workers, many of whom remained her friends.

In 2008 the Bryn Mawr College Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research presented her with a Life Time Achievement Award and she was honored as one of 100 Distinguished Alumni at the Centennial Celebration of the School.

Funeral services are private.
