Nicholas Hilliard LaMotte, 79, of Hobe Sound, Florida, died peacefully on January 29, 2025 surrounded by his loved ones in Bryn Mawr, PA. Nick was a selfless and committed father and husband, and a successful business leader in the insurance industry. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, on August 14, 1945, Nick grew up in Wilmington, DE and was the youngest of three sons of Ferdinand LaMotte III and June Mitchell LaMotte. A devoted husband, Nick is survived by his wife of 56 years, Susan (Wright), his two children, Whitney Cutler (Peter) and Gardner LaMotte (Alix), and four grandchildren, Ned Cutler, Merrill Cutler, Avery LaMotte, and Walker LaMotte.
Nick attended the Tower Hill School in Wilmington, DE and graduated from the Hun School in Princeton, NJ, followed by a year abroad in England at the Canford School. He was the class of 1968 at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a member of the Delta Phi fraternity and a standout athlete on the varsity heavyweight crew. Among his many accomplishments, he was part of the crew that won the 1968 Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships, triumphing over the University of Washington by a half-length. Shortly thereafter, Nick competed in the U.S. Olympic trials as a member of the Penn boat that lost to Harvard by 4/100s of a second in a photo finish.
On the very day of his crew's rowing triumph, Nick was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served with honor in the 5th Infantry Division (Mechanized) during the Vietnam War, where he earned a Bronze Star for acts of heroism in ground combat and two Purple Hearts for injuries sustained in the line of duty.
Directly following his tour in Vietnam, Nick enrolled in graduate school at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, earning his MBA in 1972.
In 1987 Nick founded the Villanova, PA based employee benefits consulting firm, Integrated Benefit Services with a mission to develop, manage, and improve employee benefit programs so businesses can focus on their core business. Nick served as the company's CEO until being acquired by the Alera Group in 2016.
Nick lived a life of dedication, courage, and passion. Beyond his military service, he was a member of the Gulph Mills Golf Club, Merion Cricket Club, Merion Golf Club, 4th Street Club, and Jupiter Island Club. Known for his warmth and strength, Nick's legacy will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Memorial Service on Saturday March 29th, 3:00 PM at Christ Memorial Chapel, 52 S. Beach Rd., Hobe Sound, FL 33455. Interment was private.
