Neva E. Walsh (nee Menear) passed away peacefully at her home, in Berwyn, on July 12, 2022.
She was the loving wife of the late Michael J Walsh Jr. for 43 years and she was proceeded in death by her loving daughter, Laura Forrest (Paul) and her dear sister, Joann Yoder (Robert), Sister-in-law Mary Frances Hanrahan (Paul) and brother-in-law Curtis "Skip" C. Davis.
Neva is survived by her children: Kathryn McCarey (late John), Michael J Walsh, III (Kerry), Patricia Bader (Mark), Caroline Gillen (Mark). 11 Grandchildren Julia, Sean, Mackenzie, Connal, Patrick, Kennedy, Mary Frances, Caroline, Kathryn, Madeline and Casey. Her sister Patricia McMechan (David) brother-in-law Sean Walsh (Emma). Sister-in law Joan Walsh Davis and 22 nieces and nephews.
Daughter of the late Charles Edward and Laura Anderson Menear, Neva was born on December 2, 1938 in Clarksburg WV. She graduated from West Virginia University in 1960. After college, Neva moved to Woodbury, NJ to teach at Woodbury High School. She met her future husband, Mike, over Labor Day weekend 1961 on Long Beach Island. Neva and Mike married on March 3, 1962. Neva and Mike started their life together in Bryn Mawr and then moved to their home in Villanova in 1970. Although she was a WVU Mountaineer at heart, her husband quickly turned her into an avid Villanova and Philadelphia sports fan. Neva and Mike enjoyed over 43 years of marriage together before Mike's passing in 2005.
Over the years of raising her five children, she volunteered extensively in her children's schools, St Thomas of Villanova, and the Academy of Notre Dame, happily coaching field hockey, softball and basketball. Many of these teams won championships. Neva also coached basketball at Archbishop John Carroll taking her team to the Philadelphia Catholic League Championship for the first time. Neva was also one of the first females to coach Radnor Little League Baseball. After coaching she became a PIAA Referee. She could be seen in her black and white stripes running the fields and court throughout Southeastern PA. She loved watching sports, but she loved competing in them even more. Neva and Mike loved spending time with their friends at Aronimink Golf Club and after taking up golf and tennis later in life Neva went on to win 6 golf club championships, 7 paddle tennis championships, and a doubles championship in Tennis. When she could no longer compete on the course and court, she took up bridge to try to win just one more.
Neva's house in Villanova always had an open door. Family and friends were always welcome. You were never a guest for long in her house you quickly became extended family and there was always a place at the kitchen table, a bed or a floor to sleep on and a full fridge to raid. Neva loved the holidays. Thanksgiving and Christmas were always traditions at her house. She also cherished her family vacations in Avalon with her children, nieces, nephews, and extended family. She often spoke about these family vacations fondly in her later years.
