Nancy Louise
Gowing
January 29, 1940 – February 24, 2021
Nancy Louise Gowing of Paoli, the daughter of Florence and
Mace Gowing of Swarthmore, died February 24, 2021. Nance was
born January 29, 1940. After attending primary schools in
Swarthmore, she went on to Denison University in Granville, Ohio
where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in French and later
obtained her Masters in French from the University of Pennsylvania.
No doubt her favorite semester of them all was the one she spent at
the Sorbonne University in Paris. She was also a member of Denison's
Alpha Phi sorority.
Nance had an obvious love for all things French and enjoyed a
memorable return trip to Paris many years later with her sister, Sue,
and her great-niece, Madeline. Nance also loved music and sang in the
church choirs for many years during high school and after college.
Nance taught French at Radnor Middle School for 35 years and made quite a name for herself. Her
niece Cindy once spent a day-in-the-life of a Radnor Middle School student and attended Nance's French
class. Cindy knew zero French, and Nance enjoyed taunting her throughout class. After retirement, Nance
volunteered at Main Line Hospital several days a week often earning awards for the most volunteer hours in
a year.
Nance was an avid sports fan of the Philadelphia Phillies, the Villanova basketball team and the Dallas
Cowboys. Living in Philadelphia her love of the Dallas Cowboys also required disdain for the Philadelphia
Eagles. During the Tom Landry era of the beloved Cowboys, Nancy would treat her niece and nephews in
Dallas to a Thanksgiving Day Dallas Cowboys game that was enjoyed by all.
One of her favorite local restaurants was Baxter's in Paoli. She enjoyed taking family there and when
her nephew Rob was in the area for work, they would frequently dine there. Her home in Paoli Woods was
adorned with many pictures of her family and extended family and she enjoyed telling the stories behind all
the pictures. Nance treated her niece and nephews with immeasurable love and generosity.
Nance leaves behind a sister Susan Gowing Saiter of Dallas, Texas and her husband Mark; one niece
Cindy Saiter of Austin, Texas; two nephews Rob Saiter of Coppell, Texas and David Saiter and wife, Tammy
of Midlothian, Texas. She also adored her six great-nieces and three great-nephews.
Nance will be interred with a private family gathering at the Swarthmore Presbyterian Church
Memorial Garden.
Donations in her honor may be made to Paoli Hospital Volunteer Services, 255 West Lancaster
Avenue, MOB III, Suite 239, Paoli, PA 19301. Please designate them "In Memory of Nancy Gowing."
