Obituary

Michael J. Warhol, MD passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, February 14 th , 2023 from parotid cancer. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Kathryn and daughters, Tamara and Larisa as well as his sister, Karen Thomas.

He was the son of Michael J. Warhol, Sr. and Martha Lendak, and raised in Mahwah, New Jersey. Michael went to Princeton University, receiving an AB in Biochemistry and attended the University of Pittsburgh for medical school.  He completed a pathology residency at Brigham Hospital in Boston, becoming chief resident during his final year and held a corresponding academic appointment at Harvard Medical School. During this time, he also served as a Captain in United States Army Reserves.

From 1987 to 2004, Michael was Chairman of Pathology at Pennsylvania Hospital and Director of Laboratories with a corresponding academic appointment at University of Pennsylvania Medical School. He was also Chairman of Pathology at New York Hospital Queens from 2006 to 2012. He was known for embracing innovative pathology techniques and maintaining the highest quality and standards in his labs. As a practicing pathologist, Michael also maintained a strong research agenda that resulted in the publication of over 70+ peer-reviewed publications over the course of his career, including seminal works on mesothelioma.  Michael is remembered by his colleagues, residents, and medical students with admiration and respect. Upon retirement, he continued to serve as an expert medical consultant on mesothelioma cases.

Michael was an active member of Philadelphia society. He became of member of the Union League; served as Director of the Food and Beverage Committee and later as a member of the League's Hearth Club. He became a member of the Philadelphia Club, where he is fondly remembered for organizing regular wine tastings. He was also a member of Llanerch Country Club in Havertown PA.

Michael was a wine connoisseur, who loved travel, opera, golf, sailing and skiing. He will be remembered by all for his encyclopedic knowledge on almost any topic.

Relatives and Friends are invited for the Funeral Service on Thursday February 23rd at 11:00 AM at the Church of the Redeemer, 230 Pennswood Rd., Bryn Mawr, PA followed by a reception at the church.  Interment is private.
