Mary Carmody Stuntebeck, of Radnor, PA., died peacefully at home, surrounded by her adoring family on December 17, 2015. She was 73 years old.
Mary was born in Orange, NJ on February 1, 1942 to Rita Theresa Robinson and William Alexander Carmody, Jr. She had two brothers Paul and William (Bill). She lived in Springfield Illinois as a young child, where her father investigated white-collar crime as an FBI agent. She spent her elementary and junior high school years in Maplewood and Millburn, NJ and learned to play piano and dance ballet. Her family then moved to Collingswood, NJ where she graduated from Collingswood High in 1959. Mary was creative, artistic and skilled in the arts of sewing, dress-making, knitting, drawing and flower arranging. She was an athlete and leader and became Head Cheerleader and Captain of the Girls Swimming Team. Later on, she became an avid skier and enjoyed trips with friends and family to some of the most beautiful mountains in Europe, Colorado and Park City. In 2006, she climbed Machu Pichu in Peru with three of her children.
Mary attended the University of Delaware and graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor in Science in Education. During high school and college, she modeled for various department stores and as a junior at Delaware, she was recognized as a "Top 12 Best Dressed College Girl" in Glamour Magazine, October 1962. As a student teacher volunteer, she taught at the Ferris School for Boys in Wilmington, DE, and accepted a full-time position after graduation at Caesar Rodney Elementary in Camden, DE. Soon after graduation, she met her husband, Clint Stuntebeck, who was stationed at Dover Air Force Base as a Second Lieutenant and married on November 23, 1963.
Mary created a beautiful home in which to raise her family of five children and as a result, discovered her innate talent in interior design. For over 30 years, Mary designed and decorated homes and offices that were exclusively referred to her by existing clients. She enjoyed creating warm, welcoming environments and had a unique ability to listen to the dreams and ideas of her clients and to bring them to life.
Mary always found the time to be involved in her children's lives: she led her daughters' Brownie and Girl Scout troops, attended every game, recital, and play; drove tens of thousand of miles to and from field hockey, lacrosse, baseball, and football games and practices, provided resources for horseback-riding, skating, modeling and piano lessons, and created the most memorable and magical family celebrations and times together. She loved spending time with her family during vacations on Martha's Vineyard and sailing on the Chesapeake; and took special trips with each grandchild to places such as Mount Vernon, Gettysburg, Monticello, Newport, and numerous museums.
Mary was a "lady" in every sense of the word. Her grace and beauty was immeasurable, her smile contagious. She lived a life in which every action and word was meant in sincerity and compassion for others. She loved unconditionally, and forgave easily. Her gift was that no matter who you were, she made you feel special and important to her, and welcome as a part of her family. Her caring, loving, humble nature inspired her to help those whenever they were in need, and to form long-term friendships with people she met throughout her life. Earth and now Heaven are a better place because of Mary.
Mary is the loving mother and friend to her children, Robin Stuntebeck (Geoff Winkley, MD), Allyson Myrtetus (Michael), Susan Stuntebeck Poff, John (Christina Faidley) and Will; and the adoring grandmother, "Ma Mare" to her precious ten grandchildren, Madison, James and Jackson Poff, Emma and Blake Winkley, Zach, Macaulay and Skylar Myrtetus, and Maceo and Bishop Stuntebeck. She is survived by her brother Bill and his children Ryan Carmody and Kate Bentley (Matt); her sister-in-law, Francine Payne Carmody, and her nieces Kerri Carmody-Valenzuela and Heather Myers (Gary). Her parents and brother Paul precede her in death.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday December 29, 11 am at St. Thomas of Villanova Church (Univ. Campus), Lancaster Ave., Villanova, PA. Relatives and friends are invited to a Visitation at the Church from 10 to 11 am. A Reception will follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mary's life.
