Obituary

Mary Lloyd Robb died in her home in Beaumont in Bryn Mawr, PA, on April 22, 2023, surrounded by her family. She was 88.

Known to all as Minney, she lived her values every day with her family, friends and community service. She was a life-long learner, an avid reader and member of multiple book groups, an energetic traveler, a sailor, a tennis player and a lover of the outdoors.

She had six children in her first marriage, to George R. Packard. His work in the U.S. Army, as a graduate student, and later as special assistant to the U.S. ambassador to Japan took her to Japan three times from 1957-1965. She learned to speak Japanese, studied cultural arts and helped entertain at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo. She maintained her proficiency of the language and a love of Japan all her life, and she treasured her lifelong friendships from her years there.

After life in Japan and suburban Washington, D.C., the family settled in Villanova, PA. Minney served on the Lower Merion School Board for seven years, first appointed and then elected. Other community activities included service on the Board of Directors for Planned Parenthood Southeastern Pennsylvania , and the Board of Trustees for St. George's School in Newport, R.I.

She married Edwin G. "Ted" Robb in 1978, and travelled extensively with him in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and New Zealand. They were married for 42 years until his death in 2021. They regularly visited the families of her six children and his three in Tokyo, California, Washington, Virginia, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania. They spent time with extended family every summer in the Adirondacks. She relished the canoe adventures, sailboat races, hikes in the woods, picnics on the dock and campfire evenings with grandchildren.

At the end of each year, she would ask each grandchild to send her the name of a non-profit cause they supported, and then she would donate money to all of those non-profit organizations.

Minney was the third of the four children of Gates and Lallie Lloyd of Haverford, PA. She was educated at Agnes Irwin School, Miss Porter's School, Vassar and several other colleges. She once drove the family jeep to the White House for an MPS alumnae event hosted by First Lady Jackie Kennedy.

She was predeceased by her brother Terry Lloyd. She is survived by her older brother Wingate Lloyd (married to Janet) of Lexington, MA; younger sister Prue Rosenthal of Ann Arbor, MI; and sister-in-law Ellen Lloyd. She is survived by her six children: Frank Packard (married to Keiko) of Tokyo; Wingate Packard (married to David Takami) of Kenmore, WA; Will Packard (married to Nancy) of Arlington, VA; Andrew Packard (married to Tricia Zimmerman) of Petaluma, CA; Ben Packard (married to Julie) of Seattle; Alexander Packard (married to Alison) of Brookline, MA; and 14 beloved grandchildren. She is also survived by Graham Robb (married to Betsy) of Philadelphia; Xander Robb of Costa Rica; Karl Carter of Newtown, PA; three step-grandchildren; and a large extended family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Minney Robb's name to Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania , online at ppsp.org or by check mailed to 1144 Locust St., Philadelphia, PA 19107.
