Obituary

Mark M. Herrmann, 79, of Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania peacefully passed away on July 21, 2022.  He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Catherine B. Herrmann (nee Brown) and their children:  Beth Ann (Matt) Poli and Michael (Cara) Herrmann and grandchildren Ryan Herrmann, Sean Herrmann, and Chelsea Poli.  Mark was pre-deceased in death by his parents Michael and Mary Herrmann, brother Robert Herrmann, and nephew Mark E. Herrmann.

Mark grew up in Philadelphia, graduating from Olney High School in 1960.  Following his graduation from Penn State University with a B.S. in Engineering, Mark served in the Army Corps of Engineers in Germany as a First Lieutenant.  Shortly after his return to the States, Mark asked Catherine to dance with him at The Tavern restaurant in Bala Cynwyd and they married in late 1966.  His education then continued with an MBA from Temple University.

Professionally, Mark worked for several years as an engineer and then moved on to business development for Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and University City Science Center.  Next came a lengthy tenure at The Rubin Organization where he developed a passion for real estate development, ultimately forming his own firm, Mark Herrmann & Associates.  In addition to suburban townhouse and office developments, Mark Herrmann & Associates joined forces with non-profit community and religious groups to provide healthy grocery options, senior housing, and traditional retail offerings in disadvantaged neighborhoods in Philadelphia.  For 30 years he taught courses at Temple University's Real Estate Institute.  Mark never retired; from 2010 and continuing through today, he purchased seven homes in Lower Merion that he lovingly "restored to their former glory."

Mark's love for his family had no bounds.  He encouraged his children, their spouses, and his grandchildren to work hard, have fun, and try new things because, "What could possibly go wrong?"

In 1979 Mark decided that the family should learn to sail so he bought a boat and joined the Brigantine Yacht Club where he remains a beloved member.  So commenced a life-long love of water sports on the Bonita Tideway in Brigantine, New Jersey.  Catherine was his capable crew on a GP-14 and his children learned to sail on a Sunfish.  Today, his grandchildren embody his love of the water as they swim, sail, kayak, paddle board and/or pilot motor boats on the same waters.  Whenever he saw them engaging in these activities he would whisper, "It worked."

He enjoyed donning his straw hat to garden and his work boots to repair his dock.  He enjoyed riding his bike through his 78 th year including riding it to commute to Center City in the early 1970s and participating in the Brigantine triathlon and MS City to Shore bike rides.  He enjoyed skiing -- taught the rest of the family how to do it -- and because he had learned in Europe, insisted that the family ski there, too.

Above all else, Mark valued his family and friends and we believe he will be watching over us and a part of our collective happiness forever.
