Marion Louisa
Mcdonald
April 1, 1923 – March 14, 2017
Marion Louisa McDonald (nee Wigley), of Gladwyne, PA., passed away on March 14, 2017 at Waverly Heights in Gladwyne. She was 93.
Marion was born on April 1, 1923 to Walter Franklin Wigley and Helen Hope (Lourimore) Wigley in Freeland, Maryland. She graduated from Highland High School in Street, MD at 16 and entered Boston University, where she majored in English, joined the Delta Delta Delta sorority, became proficient at bridge, and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Following graduation, she taught at the Chapel Hill school for girls in Waltham, MA. During this time, she met Bob McDonald, a Naval officer with an engineering degree who was teaching at the War College. When he was reassigned to the West Coast, he persuaded her to come out. She boarded the train in Boston, moved to Palo Alto CA, and began teaching at the Castilleja School. They married after the war in 1946 at Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Street, MD and settled in Bob's hometown of Minneapolis, where she joined the faculty of University High School and taught English.
With the birth of her two daughters, Patricia and Barbara, she turned her attention to motherhood and volunteering, though always with teaching and learning in her heart and with her nose in a book. Elementary school teachers were always invited to lunch. She joined the PTA and served as a Girl Scout leader. She was an enthusiastic member of the American Association of University Women, P.E.O., The Woman's Club of Minneapolis, and Westminster Presbyterian Church. She continued as an avid bridge player, and, with Bob, loved the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra and local theater. Although she wasn't normally outdoorsy, she took up skiing with the family and loved it, and she more or less happily went camping on vacations out West. In 1966, with Bob's transfer to the head office of Univac, the family moved to Gladwyne, PA, bringing her back to the East Coast. They became members of the Philadelphia Country Club and Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church. She traveled the world with Bob and continued devoted to her expanding family, especially her grandsons. After she moved to Waverly Heights, nothing gave her more joy than visits from them and her great-grandchildren.
Marion is survived by her daughters Patricia McDonald-Scott and Barbara McDonald; her grandchildren Genaro S. Scavello, Jr., Joseph D. Scavello, and Robert A. Scott; great-grandchildren Salvatore, Leona, Julia, and Sophie Scavello; her sister-in-law Joanna Wigley, and nephews Walter F. "Chip" Wigley, III, Steven Wigley, and Lawrence Wigley and their families.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. McDonald, her brother Walter F. Wigley, Jr., and her grandson Crispin A. Scott.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday April 8, 11:00 AM at The Chapel of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, 625 Montgomery Ave., Bryn Mawr, PA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Phi Beta Kappa Society Sustaining Fund, 1606 New Hampshire Avenue NW, Washington DC 20009 in memory of Marion L. (Wigley) McDonald.
