Obituary

Marie A. Fitzmyer (nee Cauley), 97, of Rosemont, PA passed away peacefully on Friday, January 20, 2023.  She had been living independently up until her last months with her recently deceased husband, Robert J. Fitzmyer. In her final months she was a resident at Dunwoody Village in Newtown Square, PA. During this time, her 8 children and many grandchildren visited her often and accompanied her through her final days.

Marie was born on July 22, 1925 to Kathryn and Thomas Cauley where they lived in Ardsley, PA. Marie was the second child and had 5 siblings. Siblings that predeceased her: Kay Worthington, Anne Weber, John Cawley and Eugene Cauley. Her sister Barbara Carson survives her.

Marie attended grammar school in Ardsley and later graduated from Abington High School. After high school Marie worked for Leeds & Northrop in Jenkintown for several years as an administrative assistant coordinating supplies for WWll. Two years later when she turned 20 years old, she joined the Waves, the female branch of the US Navy. After initial training, her service kept her stateside in Norman, Oklahoma with 3 close friends doing hospital work. The war was "over" several months later.

Her first weekend back home, she visited Wildwood, NJ with family and met her future husband at the Starlight Ballroom. After the Waves, Mom attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and studied fashion design. Marie and Robert (Bob) married June 17, 1950.  Nine months later they had their first of 8 children. They lived in Germantown, Flourtown and settled in Blue Bell for many years. With the family completed with 4 boys and 4 girls, they moved to Ardmore, PA.

Once all children graduated from high school, Marie attended Rosemont College and completed a degree in history. She particularly enjoyed Middle Eastern studies. She was an avid reader and enjoyed travel. As a parent she encouraged all children to work, travel and go to college. She was a busy housewife and among other things, she will be remembered for her delicious spaghetti dinners. She advocated for women's education and enjoyed playing tennis. Avalon became mom's happy place.

Marie and Bob were married for 72 years and they were devoted to each other. She has now joined her husband, our father. May she rest in peace in eternal life.
