Obituary

Margaret Mary "Butsie" McBride Scullin passed away peacefully on Saturday January 9, 2010 at her residence in Ardmore, PA. She was 86.

Daugther of the Edward F. and Catherine Dolan McBride, she was born in Philadelphia on June 18, 1923. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Catherine Deniken, Ann Bonner and Mercedes McFadden and a son Edward P. Scullin, Jr. She is survived by her son Patrick D. Scullin of Newtown Square, PA., daughters Sharon M. Scullin of Wyomissing, PA., Debra M. Scullin of Malvern, PA. and Joy Scullin Black of Baltimore, MD.; 11 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and many faithful nieces and nephews. She was known and loved for her "no rules" policy toward her grandchildren.

In 1941, Butsie graduated from John W. Hallahan High School for Girls, where she held the record for most detentions, and then went to work for Cram's shipyards during World War II. In addition to her clerical work, she sang for the troops, building on her confidence as Miss Wildwood. She sang for charity events, radio, and St. Patrick's Day all of her life, classifying herself as a saloon singer, rather than a church singer. Butsie spent summers in Stone Harbor, NJ., while raising her family, and later traveled at any opportunity. Everywhere she went, she ran into someone she knew.

Butsie worked as a runway model for the Philadelphia Model's Guild and acted as an emcee for many fashion show fundraisers. She worked in a variety of businesses and was active at St. Colman Church and the Guadeloupe Guild. She will be missed by all who knew her for her story telling, her songs, her generous heart, her loyalty and her humor.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday January 14, 10 AM St. Colman Church, Lancaster Ave. & Argyle Rd., Ardmore. Relatives and friends may call at the Church after 9 AM. Interment will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
