Katharine S.
Place
November 4, 1927 – February 20, 2022
Katharine S. Place, "Katy" (nee Smart), died peacefully on February 20, 2022 at 94 years-old from a sudden illness in her home at Beaumont Retirement Center in Bryn Mawr, PA. She was pre-deceased by her husband John B. M. Place in 2015. She is survived by three children, John B. Place, Marian R. Place, and Judith P. Sloan, as well as by a daughter-in-law Margaret Place and a son-in-law, David Sloan, and two step-grandchildren, Carter Sloan and Lindsey Sloan, and Lindsey's husband Ryan Dillon.
Katy was beloved by her husband and immediate family, and by her many nieces and nephews who were very special to her and who called her "Auntie Bo" and reveled in her wisdom and humor. Her kindness, thoughtfulness of others, liveliness, and sense of style also made her beloved to her friends and within her retirement community, where she volunteered, helping redecorate the apartment hallways. Her flair for décor also extended to her own homes. She was a HOME-maker par excellence on both the East and West coasts. She also delighted in writing poems that elegantly and humorously set the tone for celebratory events.
As an adult, Katy travelled widely with her husband John on vacations and as his supportive partner in his banking career. They lived in New York City, Millbrook, NY and San Francisco, CA before retiring in Pennsylvania. Prior to marriage, Katy was born and grew up in Bedford Hills, NY, attending the Rippowam Cisqua School. She also attended Shipley in Bryn Mawr, PA and Brearley in New York City. After attending the Barmoor School for secretarial skills, she worked in retail, then as secretary to the head of sales at Scribner's Publishing. She also worked at the Wine Institute in San Francisco, in various roles, including as an occasional model.
As a wife, mother and home-maker, Katy volunteered in the health arena, in international exchange, and other areas. She also learned Spanish as a second language. "Your mother is smart and talented and I'm so fortunate," her husband once said. "She is very special." We who knew her couldn't agree more.
Funeral Service date and time will be determined in the very near future.
In lieu of flowers, Katy requested donations to her beloved St. Peter's Church in the Great Valley , 2475 St. Peter's Rd, Malvern PA 19355.
