Obituary

Joseph W. Rogers , 91, died from natural causes surrounded by his family on March 10, 2017. He is predeceased by his sisters Mary Elizabeth Rogers and Editha Rogers Delone. Joseph was born in Philadelphia son of the late Frank Henkels and Ellen Ward Rogers.  He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Peggy Dagit Rogers, daughter of Albert Fisler and Marion Vanneman Dagit, six children: Ellen R. Miller, Joseph W. Rogers, Jr., Frank H. Rogers, Paul H. Rogers, Keith D. Rogers and Mimi R. Metzbower. He is blessed with fifteen grandchildren: Courtney Miller, Reid Miller, John Rogers, Geoffrey Rogers, Anne Rogers, Maxwell Rogers, Samuel Rogers, Katharine Rogers, Sarah Rogers, Stuart Rogers, Charles Rogers, Peter Rogers, Edward Rogers, Jordan Metzbower and Derek Metzbower.

Joe grew up in Wynnewood, PA and attended The Haverford School. He served in the 5 th US Army Air Corps in the south Pacific during WWII. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1950, where he was President of Zeta Psi fraternity.

Joe was an avid hunter, fisherman and frustrated golfer. However, he was foremost a permanent fan of his children and grandchildren. Joe and his wife traveled extensively across the United States and around the world. He started his career with Oxford Paper Company in New York and remained in the paper industry until 1990 when he retired from Weyerhaeuser Corporation. Joe enjoyed spending time with his family at the Jersey shore and the Poconos. He was active in the Valley Forge Chapter of Sons of the American Revolution and belonged to Germantown Cricket Club, Merion Cricket Club, Roton Point Club, Pine Hills Golf Club, Atlantic City Country Club, Phoenixville Golf Club and Glenhardie Country Club. Joe was particularly proud of his Philadelphia heritage as the grandson of John I. Rogers, co-founder of the Philadelphia Phillies, and of his Mennonite ancestors who helped found Ursinus College.
