Dr. Joseph M. O'Neal, of Wynnewood, PA. passed away on October 22, 2016 at Sunrise at Haverford in Haverford, PA. He was 97.
Son of the late James and Anastacia Hopkins O'Neal, he was born on the family farm in Indiana on February 2, 1919. He was raised in Indiana and graduated from Indiana University. He then graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1944. Also in 1944 he married Marjorie Sheehan and they moved to Indiana where Joseph worked with the army handling the inspection of cattle. Joseph and Marjorie then moved back to Pennsylvania where he worked for the SPCA and later opened up O'Neal Animal Hospital. He used to do spots called "Ask the Vet" on local radio stations in the Philadelphia area. He was very active in the Alumni Association for the University of Pennsylvania. After Marjorie passed away in 1989, Joe remarried in 1992 to Lorraine Cieplinski. They lived down in Longport, NJ for many years where Joe was very active in the local American Legion Post. Joe loved his work, he loved animals and he was a true "country doctor", but the thing that was really most important to him was his family.
He was the beloved husband of Lorraine Cieplinski O'Neal and the late Marjorie Sheehan O'Neal who passed away in 1989. Devoted father of Joseph M., II. (Bonnie), James (Janet), Margaret McManus (William), Peter Horos (Kathy), and Debbie Haack (Roger). Loving grandfather of Dawn O'Neal, Debbie O'Neal, Bridget McManus (Chris Fischer), Megan McManus, Kate Kelly (Charlie), Jennifer Murphy (Frank), Laura Yaeger (Mike), Peter Horos (Alexandra), Stephen Haack (Angela), Brian Haack and the late Joseph M. O'Neal, III. He is also survived by 9 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, his sisters Ann O'Neal and Marge Reising, brother-in-law Walter Foster and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday October 28, 10 AM at Presentation B.V.M. Church, 240 Haverford Rd., Wynnewood, PA. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to a Visitation Thursday from 6 to 8 PM at McConaghy Funeral Home, 328 W. Lancaster Ave., Ardmore, PA or on Friday from 9 to 10 AM in the Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donation may be made in his name to University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, 3800 Spruce St., Philadelphia PA 19104.
