Obituary

John Thomas "Jack" Murray, age 89, died Monday September 21, 2015 in Whitehall, PA. Mr. Murray formerly resided in Penn Wynne and Wayne, PA.

Mr. Murray, a native of Trenton, NJ., left high school to enlist in the United States Navy in World War II. He served in the South Pacific for sixteen months aboard the U.S.S. Devosa and participated in the invasion of Okinawa in April 1945.

After the war, Mr. Murray completed his education and began his 40 year career as athletic equipment supervisor for the Lower Merion School District. He was a member of the Lower Merion High School football coaching staff from 1949-1970. Mr. Murray then became "the voice of the Aces" for the next 25 years as he was the announcer for home football games. Mr. Murray was the author of several articles that were published in Scholastic Coach magazine and was inducted into the Lower Merion High School Football Hall of Fame in 2007.

Mr. Murray was a volunteer for the Penn Wynne / Overbrook Hills Fire Company for 25 years where he also served on the fire company Board of Directors. He was a director and past-president of the Lower Merion Volunteer Firemen Relief Association. Additionally, he was a director and past-president of the Penn Wynne Civic Association. He also served as a coach of the Penn Wynne Cub Scout and Colt League baseball teams and the Presentation B.V.M. football teams. Mr. Murray also served as an usher at St. Isaac Jogues Roman Catholic Church.

Jack and his wife enjoyed many years as members of Glenhardie Country Club where he was a member and past-president of the Men of Leisure Golf Association.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Parrish Murray; his children: Kathleen Foster (Dennis), Lynn Dobash (John), Peter Murray (Susan), daughter-in-law Theresa Guen-Murray, 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and his brother Thomas Murray. He was predeceased by his son Kevin Murray.

Funeral Mass Friday September 25, 10 AM St Isaac Jogues Church, 50 W. Walker Rd., Wayne, PA. Relatives and friends may call at the Church after 8:30 AM. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Thorncroft Equestrian Center, Therapeutic Riding Program, 190 Line Rd, Malvern PA 19355 or to Lower Merion High School Scholarship Fund, 600 Montgomery Ave., Ardmore PA 19003.
