John F.
Maley
March 15, 1939 – January 1, 2018
John F. Maley, of Bala Cynwyd, PA. passed away on January 1, 2018 at Lankenau Hospital. He was 78.
Son of the late John F., Sr. and Sara Monica Higgins Maley, he was born in Cambridge, MA on March 15, 1939.
John was the beloved husband of 50 years to Loretta Maley (nee Trese). Devoted father of John, Thomas, Kathleen, Sara Maley McCurley (Brett) and Margaret St. Andre (William). Loving grandfather of Reed & Tate McCurley and Loretta, Lillian & Liam St. Andre. Dear brother of Monica Maley and the late Rev. William A. Maley.
John was a loving husband, father, and brother and doting grandfather with a strong belief in community and service, including enjoyment of his activities coaching youth sports, most memorably soccer, town watch, constable of Elections, reoccurring role as well intentioned agitator at township meetings, yoga and spin class enthusiast, board member and supporter of the Strong Kids Campaign at the YMCA. He took his duties as family historian seriously, keeping alive family lore. He enjoyed drawing on his checkered undergraduate experience and two masters degrees to enhance his effectiveness as an adjunct professor at Delaware County Community College and personal tax consultant to family, friends and anyone with a case beer.
John was an avid story teller, perfecting through repetition and introduction to strangers of a solid repertoire of classics ranging from exploits in upstate Pennsylvania, Seoul, Narberth soccer fields and anywhere his grandchildren have been. He drew heavily on his experience in military intelligence to raise his 5 children and sniff out any surprise celebrations. He preferred to watch rowing and soccer games accompanied by a cold steady rain, or if at all possible with snow. Regardless of the weather he never missed a game or recital and rarely a practice.
Rest assured he is doing all he can to insure an Eagles/Steelers Super Bowl. He will be watching over all of us, ready to correct any wrongs with a cosmicly delivered strongly worded letter, loving hug or encouraging pep talk that most likely ends in "take a lap."
He is missed.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday January 6, 12 PM at St. Matthias Church, 128 Bryn Mawr Ave., Bala Cynwyd, PA. Relatives and friends may call at the Church after 10:30 AM. Interment will be private at a later date.
