Obituary

John C. Joy, of Gladwyne, PA., passed away on February 19, 2013, at Waverly Heights in Gladwyne, PA. He was 88.

Son of the late William V. and Mary Mangan Joy, he was born July 11, 1924 in Kilorglin, County Kerry, Ireland.

After WWII, he became a leader of the youth hostel movement in Ireland, leading groups on bicycle tours of Europe and opening hostels in Ireland. He came to the US through a scholarship from John D. Rockefeller, offered to promote youth hostelling in the US. He ultimately settled in Philadelphia, and was one of the founders of the Chamounix Mansion Youth Hostel in Fairmount Park. He was a successful businessman, who owned an insurance agency for over 50 years.

He was the beloved husband of nearly 40 years of the late Abigail Joy (nee Tinney). Devoted father of Kathryn Joy and Jennifer Curtis (John). Loving grandfather of Dylan Curtis. Dear brother of William V. Joy, Kathleen Coleman, Margaret Lumby and Judy Foley.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday February 22, 11 AM St. John Vianney Church, 350 Conshohocken State Rd., Gladwyne, PA. Relatives and friends may visit with the family at the Church after 10:30 AM. Interment West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, PA.
