John Tillson Jackson, a Palm Beach resident, died Friday December 17, 2010 at the age of 89. Mr. Jackson and his wife Suzanne Bartley Jackson (pre-deceased) made their residence in Palm Beach after Mr. Jackson's retirement. Their prior residence was Haverford Pennsylvania where they raised their three children.
Mr. Jackson was born May 13, 1921 in Milwaukee WI to John Franklin Jackson and Elizabeth Tillson Jackson. He was an only child. He received his B.S in A.E (ME) in 1942 from Cornell University, where he was the president of his fraternity, Zeta Psi. As 2nd Lieutenant - Major Jackson, Ordinance of the Army of the USA, he served from 1942-1946, stationed at Pearl Harbor and Manila.
He began his career in NYC with George S. Armstrong & Co., Inc. where he rose from Junior Engineer to Vice President and Director. Subsequently he held executive positions with major U.S Corporations including the International Telephone and Telegraph Co., Sperry Rand, where he was Vice President and General Manger of their International Operations, Remington office Equipment Division during which time he resided with his family in Lausanne Switzerland. Upon his return stateside in 1968 he accepted a position with General Waterworks Corporation, Vice President Industrials, headquarters in Philadelphia. Pa. General Waterworks Corp soon thereafter merged with International Utilities Corp, ultimately forming IU International, also headquartered in Philadelphia. Mr. Jackson remained with IU International until his retirement in 1983. At retirement, Mr. Jackson was Vice Chairman of IU and Chairman of C. Brewer Company, Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of IU, located in Hawaii.
Mr. Jackson was active on several Corporate Boards including The Vanguard Group of Investment Companies, Delaware Trust Company, Bradford White Corporation, IU International and others. Mr. Jackson was equally active on Civic Boards including The Academy of natural Sciences, The Business Council for International Understanding, The Philadelphia Association for Clinical Trials (PACT), and The World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, among others.
Mr. Jackson is survived by his three children: Suzanne Jackson McDevitt (husband Joseph T.) of Villanova, PA, Jennifer Jackson Davies (husband Dwight R.) of Mendham, NJ., and John Tillson Jackson, Jr. of Westerville, OH; and by his two grandchildren, Devin R. Davies of Boston, MA and Drew Jackson Davies of Mendham, NJ.
Memorial services will be held at 2pm, Saturday January 8, 2011 at the Church of The Redeemer, 230 Pennswood Road, Bryn Mawr, Pa. Interment was private. Remembrances (in lieu of flowers) may be made in memory of John T. Jackson to Zeta Psi Fraternity Educational Foundation, 15 South Henry Street, Pearl River, NY 10965.
