John Edward Heppe, a resident of Bryn Mawr for over 60 years, died at the Bryn Mawr Hospital, at age 95, on Friday morning, November 6, 2015. He passed away peacefully early in the morning surrounded by his 3 children.
Jack, as everyone knew him, was born September 5, 1920 in Philadelphia, PA, and grew up in Bala Cynwyd. He was the son of Marcellus Jules Heppe and Mary Taylor . He graduated from The Episcopal Academy in 1939 and went on to receive his B.S. in Economics at the Wharton School of The University of Pennsylvania in 1943. He also was a member of the Delta Phi Fraternity.
He served in World War 2 from April of 1944 to September 1945 as a navigator in the 8th Army Air Force. He flew in over 30 missions in a B-17 for the 305th Bombardment Group. His missions were primarily over Germany and Northern France. In January 1945, he received an Air Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster. The citation reads " For meritorious achievement while participating in sustained bomber combat operations over Germany and German occupied countries. The courage, coolness and skill displayed by these Officers and Enlisted Men upon these occasions reflect great credit upon themselves and the Armed Forces of the United States." He was a First Lieutenant at the time of his honorable discharge.
Jack married Patricia Moore Austin (Patty) in Philadelphia on January 25, 1947. They were happily married for over 63 years.
He is survived by his three children, John Edward Heppe, Jr., Blair Austin Heppe, and Patricia Heppe Stouch; five grandchildren, Abigail Eleanor Heppe, Ashley Megan Heppe, Meredyth Austin Heppe, James Cooper Stouch and Emily Austin Stouch. Everyone is still in the Philadelphia Main Line area except for Abbie, in Los Angeles, Ashley, in Denver and Meredyth in Wilmington.
During his lifetime, Jack spent most of his career as the owner of his own company, J.E.Heppe and Co. on the Philadelphia Stock Exchange. He joined the Exchange in 1953. He was a stock specialist and for many years was the specialist in Ford and 12 other stocks on the Exchange. Up until his final day at home, he was actively buying and selling stocks - his true passion. Over the years, he and Patty belonged to the Merion Golf Club, Gulph Mills Golf Club, Merion Cricket Club and various clubs on both St Croix and in Maine where they spent most of their vacations.
John Edward Heppe was a great man and a wonderful father. He will be deeply missed.
A Funeral Service will be held on Monday November 16, 11 AM at Church of the Redeemer, 230 Pennswood Rd., Bryn Mawr, PA. Relatives and friends may call at the Church after 10 AM. Interment will follow in Church of the Redeemer Churchyard.
