John J. Gartland, M.D. passed away on November 21, 2016 at Haverford Estates in Haverford, PA.  He was 98.

Son of the late John J. Gartland and Jane Madelyn Lafferty Gartland, he was born in Philadelphia on November 16, 1918.

John was a graduate of The Haverford School and Princeton University.  He attended Jefferson Medical College during World War II, graduating in the September Class of 1944.  Upon graduation, he completed a 9 month internship at Jefferson Hospital before serving as a Captain in the United States Medical Corps from 1946 to 1948.  He returned to his alma mater in 1952 to become Chairman and the first full-time professor of Orthopaedic Surgery of the University.  Dr. Gartland authored 6 published medical books.  He is past President of both the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society and the Philadelphia Orthopaedic Society.  In 1979 he was elected President of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the largest orthopaedic organization in the world.  He was an active member of the Jefferson Medial College Alumni Association, having served as its president from 1974-1975.  Dr. Gartland was also Chairman of the Alumni Achievement committee from 1993-2001 and chaired the publications committee for the Alumni Bulletin. He served as member of the University's Board of Trustees for two terms, and until 2008 he was the University's Medical Editor.  He has been the recipient of many accolades, including the Jefferson Medical College Distinguished Alumni Award and the presentation of his portrait in 1981.  In 2009 Thomas Jefferson University bestowed upon Dr. Gartland it's highest honor, the honorary degree of Doctor of Science.

He was the beloved husband of the late Madelyn Duffy Gartland.  Devoted father of Madelyn Gartland, John J. Gartland, Jr., M.D. (Jan), Patricia Gartland Ivanoff (Steve), Mary Ellen Henigan and the late Barbara Chandlee.  He was the loving grandfather of 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday November 29, 11 AM at St. Margaret Church, 208 N. Narberth Ave., Narberth, PA.  Relatives and friends may call at the Church after 10 AM. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
