John J.
Braithwaite, Sr.
November 8, 1932 – May 28, 2025
John J. Braithwaite, Sr., aged 92, of Rosemont, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on May 28, 2025. Remarkably witty and sharp as a tack until the very end, John lived a long, accomplished, and generous life—leaving behind a legacy of achievement, laughter, and love.
He was the beloved husband of the late Sally Ann Braithwaite (née Daley), with whom he shared a vibrant life filled with family, friendship, and celebration. Together they raised five children: Barbara Brosnan (Tim), John Braithwaite, Jr. (Tanya), Angie McAllister (Jack), Tony Braithwaite, and the late Hugh Braithwaite (Carolyn). John was a devoted grandfather to fourteen and a proud great-grandfather to thirteen.
Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and raised in Penn Wynne, Pennsylvania, John graduated in 1951 from Lower Merion High School, where he distinguished himself as a true scholar-athlete. As Captain of the undefeated football team his senior year, he was named an All-State Tackle and awarded the prestigious Maxwell Award. His legacy on the field earned him a place in the Lower Merion Football Hall of Fame. In addition to football, John was a National Interscholastic Rowing Champion during his high school years—setting the tone early for a life marked by excellence.
John received 38 college football scholarship offers before choosing to attend the University of Pennsylvania, where he continued his athletic career. After college, he answered the call to serve and enrolled in the United States Navy's Aviation Officer Candidate School. Commissioned as an Ensign in October 1956, he commenced flight training and went on to fly anti-submarine patrols throughout the North Atlantic and Caribbean. He also served as his squadron's First Lieutenant, liaising directly with government officials. Under his leadership, his squadron received the highest grade among 26 competitive organizations during an annual administrative inspection—an early example of John's unwavering standards of excellence.
Following his military service, John transitioned into the business world with the same vigor and sharp mind. He began his professional career at Downingtown Paper Company, but would make his most significant mark in the pharmaceutical industry. As Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Paco Pharmaceutical Services, John was instrumental in growing the company from a $3 million operation in one plant to a $68 million enterprise spanning seven plants, including facilities in Puerto Rico. He later became President of Accupac, Inc., in Harleysville, where he again steered the company to record-breaking profits. His final professional chapter was as founder and President of Pharmasource, a consulting firm through which he shared his decades of experience and insight.
A titan in the Philadelphia pharmaceutical industry, John served on the Dean's Advisory Board at the University of the Sciences School of Pharmacy and the Temple University School of Pharmacy. He was also a past President of the Pharmaceutical Trade Association, the Philadelphia Drug Exchange.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, John was a man of tremendous humor and personal warmth. His quick wit and timing were legendary, and often business meetings turned into stand-up comedy routines, with John's colleagues doubled over in laughter. His great love of theatre began as a 14 year-old Usher at Westport Country Playhouse in Connecticut where he delivered telegrams and packages to stars Buddy Ebsen, June Havoc, and Tallulah Bankhead among others. He took to the professional stage himself once, as the voice of the narrator in Act II Playhouse's production of Didn't Your Father Have This Talk With You?, written by and starring his son, local actor and comic Tony Braithwaite. Many who knew John would say without hesitation that he was "the funniest man they ever met."
His generosity was equally legendary—you never picked up the check when dining with John Braithwaite. He and Sally were natural hosts, throwing countless lavish parties at their homes on Maple Avenue and in Rosemont for friends, parishioners, and extended family. And while the parties were grand, his favorite dining experiences came from visiting his beloved local restaurants—especially the former General Wayne Inn in Merion and Busch's Seafood in Sea Isle City, New Jersey.
John was also an avid reader and staunch believer in staying informed. He encouraged every one of his children and grandchildren to "read the newspaper every day!" A true Philadelphia Eagles fan, a lover of dogs, and a quiet philanthropist, John Braithwaite embodied the spirit of a life fully and generously lived.
John J. Braithwaite, Sr. will be deeply missed by all who knew him—and joyfully remembered by the many whose lives he touched with his strength, humor, wisdom, and unshakable love.
