Joel Stephen Stern, of Wayne, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at his home on August 19, 2026, at the age of 79. He lived in Wayne for 31 years, but his Tennessee roots always remained an important part of him.
Joel was the beloved husband to his wife of 37 years, Renee (Gaia) Stern; loving father to Tripp (Ashley), Meredith, and Will; and devoted grandfather to Cameron, JJ, Cooper, and Hunter. Being a grandfather brought Joel tremendous joy . He was affectionately known as “Big Daddy.” He also had an especially deep love for his dogs and cats, who were an important part of his life and brought him great happiness.
Joel was born in Nashville, Tennessee, where he spent his childhood and school years. He later made Memphis his home, and it was a city that remained especially close to his heart throughout his life. Joel graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and later earned his graduate degree from the University of Memphis.
His early career included positions with IBM and later Herman Miller. In 1995, Joel and his family moved from Memphis to the Philadelphia area, where he and Renee started their family business.
Joel was deeply involved in his children’s lives, particularly their sports and travel teams. He could often be found at a practice or game surrounded by a group of parents, entertaining anyone who would listen to one of his stories.
Storytelling was a part of Joel . He told stories with a wonderful sense of humor, a quick wit, and he could always turn an ordinary experience into something extraordinarily entertaining . He brought humor, warmth, and a memorable presence wherever he went. His best stories were told in front of an audience while he sipped Coca - Cola. Joel was steadfast in his belief that “Coca - Cola was life,” and true to his word, he rarely drank anything else. Those who knew Joel will remember not only the stories themselves, but the unmistakable way he told them and the laughter that so often followed.
Above all, Joel was devoted to his family. He valued the time he spent with them and they with him. His family will remember him with tremendous love and affection. They will greatly miss his humor, his personality, and his unwavering commitment to them .
In keeping with Joel’s wishes, he will be cremated. His family will gather privately in Nashville, Tennessee, where he grew up, for a celebration of his life.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to BAYADA Home Health Care, especially Robert, for the kindness, compassion, and exceptional care that was provided to Joel throughout the past year. The family is also deeply grateful to the BAYADA Hospice team for their compassionate care and support during Joel’s final days.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Joel’s name may be made to Boys Town, an organization he proudly supported, or to Main Line Animal Rescue, in recognition of his lifelong love of animals.
