Obituary

Joan Elizabeth Ryan (nee Morris), passed away peacefully at home on June 16, 2022. She was the beloved wife of 43 years to the late Patrick T. Ryan, Jr. Joan was preceded in death by her loving parents, Andrew King Morris and Mary Theresa (May) Wehrung, and siblings Margaret (McAvoy), Andrew King Morris, Suzanne (Vorozilchak) and Catherine (Edwards). Family meant everything to Joan, and she will be dearly missed by her seven
children, Patrick T. Ryan, III (Susan), Andrew Ryan (Eileen), Elizabeth Hamilton (Richard), Matthew Ryan (Jill), Peter Ryan (Megan), Paula Ryan (Brett Case), David Ryan (Kelly), twenty-four grandchildren (Kevin, Justine, Richard, Sean, Allison, Catherine, Jennifer, Aidan, Fletcher, Katherine, John, Emily, Anna, Thomas, Patrick, Liam, Tierney, Quinn, Finn, Sophie, Grace, Jameson, Kennedy and Brody) and two great-grandchildren (Charlotte and Fischer).
Joan was born on April 12, 1933, in Ridgewood, New Jersey. The family moved to Clarks Summit, PA
shortly thereafter. When Joan was just two and her sister Cathy a newborn, her father suddenly passed
away, leaving May with five young children to raise. We don't say "to raise on her own", though,
because May's sisters and brothers immediately surrounded her with love and support, lifting her up
through this tragedy. These values of "family before anything else" and "always be there for each
other" were impressed on Joan and the other Morris children, and have been passed on fiercely to each
generation.
Joan graduated from Clarks Summit High School and Marywood College with a degree in Business.
While at Marywood, she met Patrick T. Ryan, Jr., a student at the University of Scranton, and soon
thereafter they fell in love. Once Pat graduated from law school, they were married on September 8,
1956. Through all their years together, Pat and Joan set a loving example for their seven children of
faith, loyalty, personal responsibility, sacrifice and resilience. The door was always open at their home
and Joan was always quick to add another plate to the dinner table for any new arrivals. Joan was an
active member of St. Margaret's Church in Narberth for over 60 years serving as a Eucharistic Minister,
helping infirm parishioners in the HOPE group, participating in food collections, tutoring sessions and
bible studies. Joan was always happiest when she was doing things for other people and spending time
with her family. When Pat passed away on June 28, 1999, Joan's children knew they had one directive:
"Take care of your mother!" For the remaining 23 years of her life on this earth, Joan felt that love
manifest in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to visit from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM on Saturday, June 25, 2022 at St.
Margaret of Antioch Parish, 208 N. Narberth Avenue, Narberth, Pennsylvania 19072. The Funeral Mass
for the repose of Joan's soul will follow at 10:30 AM. Joan will be laid to rest next to her beloved Pat at
Calvary Cemetery in West Conshohocken immediately following the mass. Joan had a great compassion
for others, and one of her daily concerns was that others would have enough in their time of need.
In honor of her generosity, in lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in her name to
Philabundance at 3616 South Galloway Street, Philadelphia, PA 19148 or at www.philabundance.org.
