Obituary

James Joseph Whelan  "Wheels", of Newtown Square, PA., passed away on March 23, 2020 at The Bryn Mawr Hospital. He was 82.
Son of the late William F.  Whelan II. & Margaret Smith Whelan, Jim was born in Ardmore, PA on April 6, 1937.  He was a graduate of St. Joseph Preparatory School, Class of 1954.  He stayed a Hawk and went to St. Joe's University graduating in 1958.   He went on to work for IBM and INA, then eventually become the President at Watt & Dobson Insurance Company in 1970 where he worked for 45 years.   Jim also volunteered for the Merion Fire Company as Treasurer for many years and is the Former President (1982- 83) and a proud member of  the Ardmore Rotary Club.  As a member of rotary he loved going to the Meade School to read with the kids. He was also Treasurer of the Lower Merion Police Pension Fund.
He also enjoyed golfing, going to the movies, crossword puzzles, going down to Avalon in the summer and spending time with his kids and grand kids.  He was also a sports fan of the local pro sports team and was a  season ticket holder for the Eagles and St Joe's Hawks Basketball team.

Jim was the beloved husband of Polly Whelan (Watt).  Devoted father of Kimberly Shaud (Robert), Jami Whelan, Katie Whelan and Brian Whelan (Jenny).  Loving grandfather of Colin, Norah, Keira and Ian. Dear brother of William Whelan and brother-in-law of Tom Watt (Lucy). Jim was also a loving Uncle and Great Uncle to many beautiful nieces and nephews

Due to the COVID 19 outbreak funeral service and interment will be private for immediate family.  There will be a Memorial Mass and Life Celebration held at a later date for Jim.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that Memorial donations may be made in Jim's name to the Merion Fire Company , 35 Greenfield Ave., Ardmore PA 19003.
