Obituary

Henry J Doherty Jr., M.D., 91, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2024, surrounded by his devoted family. He practiced as an Anesthesiologist at Lankenau Hospital for most of his 40-year career, including 11 years as Chairman of Anesthesiology.  In addition to being a hardworking father to six and husband to the love of his life, Mary Anne Hollman, he was an avid hunter, fisherman, and real estate investor.

Hank was born in Trenton, New Jersey and knew from an early age that he wanted to be a medical doctor. He attended Johns Hopkins University, where he graduated Pre-Med while also lettering in fencing, football, and baseball. He attended medical school at St. Louis University, where he met Mary Anne, and after their first date, knew he had found love at first sight. The two got married in 1956 and remained together for the next 67 years.

Hank and Mary Anne moved to West Philadelphia in 1958 to complete his medical residency at Philadelphia General Hospital and then to Wynnewood in 1962 where they raised their six children.

Hank's life was defined by his hard work. To make ends meet as a student, he held a number of different jobs including chauffer, construction laborer, gas station attendant, classroom custodian and servant to Jesuit priests. During his medical career, the 60-hour work weeks as an Anesthesiologist were not enough. Hank moonlighted at Misericordia Hospital on nights and weekends, then trained and practiced as a hypnotist for more than two decades.

Growing up in New Jersey, the beach always had a special place in Hank's heart. In the early 1960s, he found a small island at the Jersey Shore named Avalon. He knew it was something special and decided to make it his second home. He eventually owned numerous investment properties on the island—which, much to the chagrin of Mary Anne and the kids, were cleaned and managed entirely by the family. As Hank would always say on those early Saturday mornings, "You can't hoot with the owls at night and soar with the eagles in the morning."  It was a lesson the kids never forgot. However, to Hank, the most important part of the properties was the way they brought the whole family together. Often, he would rally his entire family to work together by saying "many hands make light work," whether the job needed one person or eight.

Despite Hank's professional success, he always said that his proudest achievement was his family. His kids knew he could be demanding, but that it always came from a place of love. He expected much of himself, and those around him, because in the end, he wanted his family to work hard, and become the best versions of themselves. As he always said, "You have to have a dream in order for a dream to come true."

To those who knew and loved him, Hank was a force of nature, a determined Trenton kid who aspired for more in life and achieved it. But his greatest legacy is his loving family and the dreams that he taught them to pursue. He will be missed.

Hank is pre-deceased by his parents Henry and Margaret Doherty, sisters, Eleanor D. O'Shea, Amelia Doherty and Marguerite Martinez and granddaughter Julianna Doherty.  He leaves behind his wife, Mary Anne, his children, Peggy, Hank, Jim, Jeff, Steve, and Marla, as well as twenty-one grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and counting.

Relatives and friends are invited on Monday August 5th, Visitation from 9 to 10 AM with Funeral Mass to begin at 10 AM at St. Colman Church, Lancaster Ave. & Argyle Rd., Ardmore PA.  Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken, PA.
