Obituary

Harriet H. Sturgis (née Houlihan), age 86, of West Chester PA, passed away peacefully and surrounded by her family on December 23, 2023. Daughter of the late Arthur F. Houlihan, Sr. and Agnes Gibbons Houlihan, she was born in Ben Avon Heights PA and grew up on a farm near Philadelphia, PA with her brother, sister and many family pets. She attended St. Francis grade school in Lenni, PA and then Holy Child Academy in Sharon Hill PA for high school where she was an excellent student. She met the love of her life, her late husband Joseph B. Sturgis Sr., Esq. of 46 years where they lived in Devon PA raising three sons and a daughter.  She was an active volunteer with the American Cancer Society, Devon Horse Show and Malvern Prep BASH. She was an avid tennis and paddle ball player, had a strong love for animals and she devoted her life to her family. The roles in her life that she was most proud of were that of being a wife, mom and grandmother.

Harriet was a beautiful person, known for her exceptional kindness, thoughtfulness, generosity, compassion, patience, and love that she extended to everyone she encountered, strangers included. She would be the first to show up at your door with a bouquet of sunflowers, sweet treats and some encouraging words just to brighten your day. She loved her home and decorating and was passionate about hosting holidays and parties.  Always happy to add an extra seat for anyone who showed up.  An excellent cook and gardener too.  She had a natural talent for entertaining.

She is survived by her children, Joe (Tracy), Doug (Debbie), Pat and Courtland Schumacher (Michael), grandchildren Shane, Brenden, Hailey, Alexandra, Hannah, Brooke, PJ, Meghan, Michael, Courtland, Cate and Matthew, great grandchildren Wyatt and Theo. She is also survived by her sister Ann Bonyun (Fred), sister-in-law Patty Sturgis (the late John) and many loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph B Sturgis, Esq., brother Arthur Frederick Houlihan Jr. and parents, Arthur F. Houlihan, Sr. and Agnes Gibbons Houlihan.
