Gustine J.
Pelagatti
October 31, 1938 – April 1, 2021
Gustine J. "Gus" Pelagatti, on April 1, 2021; age 82 years in Philadelphia; formerly of
Gladwyne, PA and Longport, NJ.
Gus was the son of the late Giustino and Margarita (Riviello); brother of the late Theresa
DiGrazio, Peter, and Jeremiah; husband of Rita (Angeloni); brother-in-law of Betty Jane and
John Devereaux, and Sherry and John Angeloni; father of Cynthia Streibich (Wayne), Julia
Bohnenberger (Charles), and Gustine Jr. (Amanda Parlett); grandfather of Christopher, Liana,
Caroline, Ava, Charlotte, Lily, and Violet; and uncle to many.
Gus was born in South Philadelphia. Following the death of his father when he was a little
boy, he was sent to board at Girard College on his 7th birthday and stayed through graduation
at the age of 18. Despite his circumstances, he thrived at Girard where excelled at soccer and
track, and then went on to attend Temple University for his undergraduate and law school
education. He helped pay his law school tuition with waitering jobs in Atlantic City, substitute
teaching in Philadelphia schools, and service in the US Air Force Reserves. Gus became a
Center City trial lawyer in private practice concentrating on civil and criminal law.
Gus enjoyed gardening (especially tending his roses), collecting antique clocks, and taking
long walks down the shore. Two of his proudest accomplishments were his US Congress
campaign run on the Republican ticket in 1970, and his novel, Wicked Wives , based on the
true story of 17 South Philadelphia women who poisoned their husbands to death for
insurance payouts. Many will remember Gus for his generous spirit, his high energy, and his
affinity toward making friends.
