Grady Ray
Walters
March 14, 1938 – November 13, 2023
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Grady R. Walters of Havertown, PA, who left us on November 13th, 2023. He was 85 years old.
Grady was the son of the late Grady Earl Durbin and Mary Bernice Mims. Grady was born in Vida, AL on March 14th, 1938. After spending much of his youth on a farm in Alabama with his beloved Uncle Paul and Aunt Betty Mims, he moved to Narberth, PA and lived with his mother and stepfather Clifford Walters.
Grady attended Church Farm School in Exton, PA, and Lower Merion High School. At Lower Merion, he excelled at science and was a member of the Varsity Crew and Football teams. After completing High School, Grady enlisted in the United States Army in 1958 and served honorably for one year.
Upon his return to PA, Grady joined the Lower Merion Police Department in 1960. He proudly served and protected the Lower Merion community as a decorated police officer for 36 years. After his retirement in 1996, Grady performed security for the late Walter H. Annenberg and John C. Haas.
Grady leaves a legacy of abundant love, enduring strength, and steadfastness. He took pride in his home and attended to his yard regularly. Over the years, he transformed his home into a place where all were welcome. After a hard day's work, he cherished spending time with his family over dinner while cheering on his favorite football teams –The University of Alabama (Crimson Tide) and the San Francisco 49ers. His work ethic was unparalleled, yet he always made time for those he loved. His memory will forever be cherished by those who knew him.
Most of all, Grady enjoyed being in the presence of family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Marcella Hatton; his children, Julie McClelland and husband Glenn; Grady P. Walters and wife Irma; and grandchildren Jagur, Madeline and Grady. Grady was also a wonderful "Pop-Pop" to his grandchildren who cherished every moment with him.
