Evelyn Sholtes
Kritchevsky
September 16, 1923 – January 17, 2019
Dr. Evelyn Kritchevsky (née Sholtes) passed away on January 17, 2019. She was born on September 16, 1923, in Chicago, Illinois, to Anna Ericcson and Stephen Sholtes. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Dr. David Kritchevsky, and by her sister and brother-in-law, Eileen and Walter Ramm of Wilmette, IL.
Dr. Kritchevsky received her B.S. (1944) and her M.S. (1946) in Chemistry from Northwestern University, and her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania (1978). She was a devoted science educator who taught in many area high schools and colleges including Rosemont College and Spring Garden College, where she was the Chair of the Science Department for many years.
She was an avid eco-traveler, bird-watcher, and nature lover whose adventures took her to all seven continents, the Galapagos Islands, Nepal, and Timbuktu. She was an active outdoors woman who loved ice skating, hiking, skiing, and cycling. She was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority in college and a lifelong member of the American Association of University Women. She was also a member of the Audubon Society and the Sierra Club and a supporter of local nature preserves, parks, and museums.
She leaves behind three children: daughter Barbara Kritchevsky of Memphis, TN; daughter Janice Kritchevsky of West Lafayette, IN; and son Stephen Kritchevsky (Nannette) of Winston-Salem, NC. She also leaves behind six grandchildren, a great-grandchild, two nieces, and many friends.
In many ways, Dr. Kritchevsky was a generation ahead of her time. She was fiercely independent, deeply committed to her causes, and active in all the communities in which she participated. She was greatly loved, respected, and admired and was a role model for both peers and younger women. Her passing leaves a hole in the hearts of many.
A Memorial Service in her honor will be held on Saturday March 23, 2019, 10:30 am at Tyler Arboretum, 515 Painter Rd., Media, PA 19063
Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent in Dr. Kritchevsky's memory to: The Nature Conservancy , 4245 N. Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203.
