Elsie Bromeson Graves, 99, passed away peacefully at home on February 1, 2022. Born December 30, 1922 in Schenectady, NY, Elsie was the daughter of Earnest Alphild Bromeson, originally from Sweden, and Bergljot Thodal Bromeson, originally from Norway. Elsie was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Gene Field Graves, a daughter, Lesley Bromeson Graves, a brother, and a sister, Lily Bromeson Wilson.
Elsie graduated from Nott Terrace High School and the Mildred Elly Business School in Schenectady. Following graduation and during the WWII years, she worked for the Office of Civil Defense.
She was married to Gene Graves on November 18, 1944 at The Little Church Around the Corner in New York City. They resided in the Rittenhouse Square area of Philadelphia where they began their family. When they outgrew their house on Panama Street, they moved to a house in "the country", Gladwyne, PA, where Elsie would reside for the next 69 years.
Elsie was active in the local community and a longtime member of many organizations including the Gladwyne Library League and the Gladwyne Civic Association where she served as secretary for years. After graduating from the Barnes School of Horticulture, she became an avid gardener and for many years assisted in the beautification of Gladwyne. In addition, she was a member of the Stony Lane Swim Club and a lifetime member of Mill Creek Garden Club and Bridlewild Trails Association. Elsie helped launch the Riverbend Environmental Center. She attended St. Christopher's Episcopal Church for 69 years, where she volunteered in many roles - soup kitchen, Altar Guild, choir, and Azalea Day.
Her hobbies included swimming, painting, gardening, traveling (rediscovering roots in Europe), and spending precious time with her family and friends.
Elsie and Gene were blessed with four children: Geoffrey Graves (Anita), Pamela Murray (Drew), Linda DiMartini (Rich), and Hilary Young (Tim); nine grandchildren (Timothy, Stephanie, Allison, Scott, Derek, Hilary, Alex, Elizabeth, and Taylor), 11 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews in this country as well as in Europe.
Relatives and friends are invited to her Memorial Funeral Service on Saturday May 21, 11:00 AM at St. Christophers Episcopal Church, 226 Righters Mill Rd, Gladwyne, PA. Interment will be private for the family.
