Obituary

Eileen McNulty Berens, Ph.D., a career educator and resident of Dunwoody Village in Newtown Square, PA., passed away on December 25, 2017. She was 82.

Eileen was the beloved wife of the late Raymond A. Berens. Devoted mother of Maureen Anne Flanagan (Joseph).  Loving grandmother of James Richard "Jamie" Flanagan and  Joseph C. "Joby" Flanagan, III.. Dear sister of the late Anne, Joseph and Mimi McNulty.

Eileen was born in Philadelphia, the youngest of four children of Joseph and Mary McNulty.  She graduated from Gesu School, the Academy of Notre Dame on Rittenhouse Square, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Immaculata University.  She became a tenured teacher of high school English at Cherry Hill High School West in Cherry Hill, NJ., during which time she completed a Master of Arts degree in Speech Communication at Temple University.  She moved on to temporary college teaching at Temple, West Chester and Rowan (Glassboro).  Eileen held a full time position as a professor at Villanova University in the Communication Departmant for 25 years.  During this period, she completed a  Ph.D. program in Rhetoric and Communication at Temple University, specializing in intergenerational communication and conflict.

She held numerous leadership positions throughout her life beginning with Girl Scouts, as an assistant to the troop leader, during her early teen years, and president of her high school class.  She was a class officer and a student government executive in college.  She held offices in the Catholic Alumni Club , and a local branch of AAUW.  She was also a Republican committeewoman and chair of the 9th Ward, Philadelphia.  Recently, she served on the executive board of St. Davids Park Condominium, where she lived at the time, as both a member and president.

He commitment to Catholic education resulted in endowing an annual scholarship to Hallahan High School in memory of Mary & Anne McNulty, her mother and sister, who were graduates of the school.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday December  30, 11 AM at St. Thomas of Villanova Chapel, 1229 Lancaster Ave., Rosemont PA.  Relatives and friends may call at the Chapel after 10 AM. Interment is private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Academy of Notre Dame de Namur, 560 Sproul Rd., Villanova PA 19085.
