Edith Niedringhaus Phelan passed on October 24, 2012 at the age of 81. She was the sixth of seven children born to Frances and Paul Niedringhaus. She grew up on the Main Line. She was married for 53 years to James J Phelan Jr. of Bryn Mawr, Pa. and Naples, Fla. She was devoted to her husband, her five children; James J Phelan III (Julia) of Atlanta, Ga.; Paul Phelan of Bryn Mawr, Pa.; Mary Frances Phelan de Bellescize (Olivier) of Fontainebleau, France; John Phelan (Monica) of Bryn Mawr, Pa.; and Kathleen Phelan Sullivan (Robert) of Wynnewood, Pa. She is also survived by 14 adored grandchildren and her brother Paul Niedringhaus (Carol) of Arlington Heights, IL .
Edie graduated from the Country Day School of the Sacred Heart in Overbrook and Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart in New York. She captained many of the field hockey and lacrosse teams in high school and college.
Edie entered politics in Lower Merion Township as a township commissioner. She served three terms as Commissioner of Ward 1. She received the Alexandra D. Toland award for Outstanding Community Service by the republican women of the Main Line in 1992.
For over 50 years she worked with her brother William (Bull) Niedringhaus in many capacities including as Vice President and Treasurer at his company NICO products and upon his death, ran the company for several years culminating in a receiving an award in New York for outstanding sales in the US.
She was a member of Overbrook Golf Club and The Club of Pelican Bay in Naples, Florida. She was an avid tennis player her whole life and even competed against Althea Gibson, the number one ranked player in the world at the time.
Edie was a Eucharistic minister and lecturer at St. John Vianney Church in Gladwyne, PA, St. William's Church in Naples, FL and at St. Brendan the Navigator in Avalon, NJ.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday November 2, 10 AM at St. John Vianney Church, 350 Conshohocken State Rd., Gladwyne, PA. with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken. Relatives and friends are invited to a Visitation Thursday evening from 7 to 9 PM at McConaghy Funeral Home, 328 W. Lancaster Ave., Ardmore, PA. or on Friday from 9 to 10 AM at St. John Vianney Church.
