Dorothy Goodwin
Shelton
November 24, 1937 – August 28, 2023
With family by her side, Dorothy Goodwin Shelton, (fondly known as "Dodie") passed away
peacefully on Monday, August 28, 2023 at the age of 85.
Dodie was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida & she called it home for many years; from
early childhood to early adulthood. She was incredibly proud to have attended Florida State
University in Tallahassee. She was a huge FSU football fan and continued to follow the team,
even after college, as a loyal supporter. During her time at Florida State, she was a member of
the Pi Beta Phi sorority and was voted by her peers to be a part of the 1957 Gator Bowl Court!
Post college, Dodie put her Education degree into motion. She was an elementary school
teacher for many years; a job that she loved so much.
"The love of my life" is how she often referred to her husband, Clyde, with whom she shared 55
years of marriage. Dodie & Clyde first met when Clyde showed up one day at her apartment,
however; he was not there to see Dodie, but to take her roommate out on a date! Dodie's
roommate asked her to sit and chat with Clyde for a bit, as she was not quite ready for their date
yet. The rest is history! I guess you could say Thank Goodness for roommates running late!
In 1976, Dodie and Clyde built a lovely home where they raised their children in Chadds Ford,
Pennsylvania, and then in 2002, they moved to a townhouse in West Chester. They enjoyed both
homes equally.
Dodie loved to travel – from touring Europe as a young adult to spending the winter months in
Naples, Florida with Clyde.
She took a break from the workforce to raise her children, then later in life, joined a local team
working for the Boy Scouts of America. Here, Dodie fostered so many wonderful friendships .
Some of her closest friends were those she met through Boy Scouts of America.
She was not a golfer, but being a member of Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square,
Pennsylvania was a large part of her and her family's life. Dodie enjoyed many social events at
Aronimink, & loved to support her husband and his love of the game of golf. It was at Aronimink
where she experienced a monumental moment that stuck with her forever. During a PGA
tournament that Aronimink was hosting, she met professional golfer, Jordan Spieth on the
practice green, and that encounter was such a thrill for her!
Dodie was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Vivian Goodwin, her brother, James
Goodwin, and her beloved husband, Clyde Shelton. She is survived by her sister, Diane Goodwin
Douglas, niece Melinda Douglas, nephew Brian Douglas, as well as her loving children, Scott
Shelton, Page Shelton Hinkle, Page's husband, B.J. Hinkle, and her two grandchildren, who
were her pride and joy, R.C. and Laney Hinkle. Dodie is also survived by a few other relatives
who reside outside of the state of Pennsylvania.
Although Alzheimer's disease robbed her of so much over the past 4+ years, it couldn't even
begin to steal her vibrant personality, her super sweet soul, and her magnetic Southern charm.
A Memorial Service for Dodie will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at 11:00 AM at
Westminster Presbyterian Church, Route 202 and Pleasant Grove Road, in West Chester, PA.
The family will receive visitors at the church from 10:00-11:00 AM.
