Donald J.
Mcbride
June 8, 1937 – March 11, 2018
Don McBride of Haverford, PA and Ocean City, NJ, passed away on Sunday, March 11, 2018 surrounded by his loving wife and five children at The Bryn Mawr Hospital. He was 80.
Don touched thousands of lives and was an inspiring force as a dedicated family man, teacher and leader. His passion and commitment to the many things that he cared about led to a life of exceptional accomplishments as an educator and a coach.
He devoted his life to his beloved wife Joanne and their five children: Brian, Kelly, Christie, Don, and Shannon, and eleven grandsons: Gavin, Trevor, Tucker, Shane, Connor, Logan, Brennan, MJ, Mac, Colin and Henry, who have been blessed by having Don's strong and caring presence in their lives.
Don, born on June 8, 1937 in Philadelphia, and his sister Kathleen are the children of Joseph and Rose McBride; and they grew up in the Overbrook area of Philadelphia. After graduating from Our Lady of Lourdes in 1951, Don attended Saint Joseph's Preparatory School where he excelled as a football quarterback and a basketball player.
After graduating from S.J.P. in 1955, Don attended Saint Joseph's University and graduated in 1959. He went on to complete his Master's Degree in Education while coaching and teaching at Malvern Preparatory School. His success at Malvern led him to be chosen by the founders of the Little Quakers Football Team to help coach talented players from the Philadelphia area.
Don then became a teacher and coach at The Haverford School where he taught English and Latin, and coached basketball, football, and golf. He will always be remembered for his fairness, wit and his extraordinary ability to bring out the best in his students and athletes.
The Haverford School honored Don by inducting him into the Cum Laude Society and the Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2009, Haverford named the basketball court after him and subsequently established the Donald J. McBride Scholarship, which provides funding to worthy students in need of financial assistance.
During his tenure at The Haverford School, Don was the Director of Camp Tecumseh in New Hampshire where he guided and encouraged campers and counselors from 1977-1983 to strive outside their comfort zone to become better boys and develop into gentlemen. All those whom Don touched are forever grateful for his presence in their lives.
