Diane Augustine Sommer (nee Dagit), formerly of Ardmore, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2016 in her home, Glenhardie, Wayne, PA. She was 81.
Diane lived a full and accomplished life. She attended Lower Merion High School where she was both a varsity lacrosse player and a member of the cheerleading squad. After graduating as a scholar athlete from LM, she attended Rosemont College as a Spanish major. While at Rosemont she further displayed her energetic approach to life by volunteering to teach English to disadvantaged youth in Philadelphia and turning her lacrosse stick in for a tennis racket.
After graduation Diane began a career that spanned more than 40 years while raising a family of five. Initially she started in advertising working for N. W. Ayer in Philadelphia. Shortly thereafter she met her husband of 58 years, Treacy Sommer, and spent the next several years staying very active as a young mother, president of the St. Margaret's PTA, and member of various volunteer organizations. In the early 1970's with four children (and never one to take yesterday's accomplishments as a reason to rest), she went on to have a 5th child and return to school. After studying design at the Philadelphia Fashion Institute, she started her next career at Middendorf Enterprises. There she honed her craft as a designer and master pattern maker of women's nightwear. As her children can attest, she could make anything from a slipcover to a tiny outfit for a Barbie Doll. Diane's passion for life, creativity, generosity, and her ability to engage with all she encountered was ever present whether she was at work, gardening, painting, playing bridge, tennis, or on the dance floor. She was an engaged member at Merion Cricket Club and Glenhardie Country Club. While she could be a fierce competitor on the court or at the bridge table, she always demanded your best. Diane could light up a room with her joie de vivre and had a sparkle in her eye that would disarm the disagreeable or embolden the meek in spirit. She loved to engage in conversation, laughing and telling stories and was always able to come up with a fun word, rhyme, or jingle at the drop of a hat. She and her family had many cherished memories spending time in Avalon and Stone Harbor. She will be dearly missed.
Diane is survived by her devoted husband G. Treacy Sommer and her five children G. Treacy, Jr. (Kelly), Josephine Sommer (Thomas Wenzel), Leonide DelGatto (Lawrence), Dandurand S. Conway (Michael) and Sean H. (Maria) and 10 grandchildren Kalin & Jennifer Sommer, Andrew & Mathias Wenzel, Alexis & Adeline DelGatto, Emerson & Lucas Conway, and Stella & Matteo Sommer. Number seven of eight children, Diane's siblings include Dan Dagit, Margaret Rogers, Josephine Barnes, Suzanne Sennhenn and the late Albert F. Dagit, Jr., Marion Muldoon and Leonide Gillan. She was the daughter of Philadelphia architect Albert F. Dagit of whom she was very proud.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday June 17, 10 AM at St. Isaac Jogues Church, 50 W. Walker Rd., Wayne PA. Relatives and friends are invited to a Visitation at the Church from 8:30 to 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
